Former Man United midfielder Paul Scholes has suggested Pep Guardiola’s Man City are capable of replicating the feat of Arsenal’s Invincibles team of 2003-4.
Under Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal team featuring the likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Viera and Robert Pires went the whole season unbeaten, a first in the Premier League era, to win the title.
And Scholes believes Guardiola’s City, who won the league with a record-breaking 100 points last season, have the capability to emulate Wenger’s team.
Scholes told Premier League productions: “We’ve talked about the Arsenal team that went right through the season without losing a game and the more you look at the City team, I don’t see where they are going to get beat.
“I watched the game against Wolves and thought it could be a tricky season for them, but ever since then – I know it’s not too many games – I just don’t see who is going to get near them. I don’t see a team who will beat them.
“I think Liverpool will probably be the closest, but I just think they [City] are that good, they are in control.
“You look at the bench as well [against United]. [Gabriel] Jesus not brought on, a brilliant centre-forward, [Ilkay] Gundogan, they bring on, scores a goal. They’ve just got quality in every position.
“I think if they are at it every game, they won’t lose a game.”
What would this City team need to do to be better than the 2003-04 Arsenal?
City have currently played 12 league games and have dropped just four points, putting them top of the table with 32 points, two clear of Liverpool in second.
During their unbeaten season in Arsenal won 26 and drew 12 of their 38 games meaning they dropped just 24 points across the season. They took 14 points off the other sides in the top four and beat rivals Spurs 2-1 at home while drawing 2-2 at White Hart Lane.
Guardiola’s side have avoided defeat away at Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs meaning they have taken four points from a possible six off the current top four and have now beaten rivals United at home. Next up is a trip to the London Stadium to face West Ham after the international break.
