Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has explained why he feels Tottenham Hotspur’s achievements so far this season are “massive”.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men are battling it out for a place in the Premier League top-four once again this season.
Why is Tottenham’s position massive? Five things you need to know…
- Spurs moved to within just two points of second-placed Manchester City thanks to a 6-2 win over Everton on Sunday.
- The win also extended the gap between them and fourth-placed Chelsea to five points.
- Last week, Spurs narrowly qualified for the Champions League knockout stages after drawing 1-1 against Barcelona to secure progression.
- They also beat north-London rivals Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium to reach the semi-finals of the League Cup.
- And Klopp believes Tottenham have done well to keep up with Liverpool and Man City despite all the problems they have faced.
Klopp spoke to reporters about being title challengers but also how well Pochettino’s side have coped this season following their squad’s busy summer.
Many within the Tottenham ranks were involved at this summer’s World Cup in Russia and arrived back in England for the start of the Premier League season with little, to no break.
“We are all the challengers,” he told Sky Sports.
“But not only City. Tottenham have so many injury problems, the shortest break after the World Cup.
“I don’t know how many Belgian and English players they had, no pre-season and won all the games in a difficult situation.
“That’s really massive.”
Who was involved at the World Cup for Tottenham?
Klopp highlighted both England and Belgium as two countries who progressed far at the World Cup with Tottenham stars in their ranks.
In fact, Tottenham had more players involved in the World Cup semi-finals than any other club in the world.
For Gareth Southgate’s England, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose all remained in Russia until mid-July, with Tottenham’s pre-season starting on 26th July in the International Champions Cup.
Elsewhere, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele all played for Belgium while Hugo Lloris captained France to a World Cup triumph for the first time in 20 years.
The fact that Spurs are still competing in the Premier League, Champions League and League Cup is some achievement for a club who are also dealing with problems with their new stadium.
