Ex-Man Utd captain criticises squad for their role in Mourinho's sacking

Manchester United players have been “getting away with murder” according to former club captain Roy Keane.

United have horrifically underperformed this season which ultimately resulted in Jose Mourinho getting the sack in his third year in charge at the club.

Man Utd’s poor season: Five things you need to know…

  1. United currently sit in sixth place in the Premier League
  2. They are 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool and eight points off fourth spot.
  3. Only the bottom five teams have let in more goals than United (30) in the Premier League this season.
  4. The club has received criticism from various sources targeting Mourinho, the squad and those at the top of the United hierarchy.
  5. New caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær won his first match in charge of the club 5-1 against Cardiff City on Saturday evening.

Former United midfielder Keane has criticised the club’s squad, insisting they got away with murder with their performances under Mourinho, with the Irishman believing they have truly thrown Mourinho “under the bus”.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Keane said: “I think the players obviously get away with murder. Just the way they hide behind their manager. Whatever you say about the players they’ve thrown him under the bus.

“And people said Mourinho has been falling out with players, well you would fall out with players when they turn up overweight, when players aren’t training properly and not producing, and then for some of them to down tools.

“Shame on some of those players. I’m not Mourinho’s biggest fan, don’t get me wrong, but I can’t tolerate footballers who just hide behind their agent, their pals in the media. Bit of a joke really.”

Keane on the modern footballer.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Keane also had strong words about the attitude of the modern footballer. Admitting his opinion may be slightly aged compared to how society is at present, Keane discussed how before anything else, football must come first.

“I suppose you could say I’m a bit old school. I don’t call it old school, I call it good school.

“No matter what’s going on at your club, when you get out on that pitch, particularly at a big club like United, you go out and give it your all. No excuses.

“So this idea that these players who are maybe a little bit upset, and not just at United, trust me the modern player they’re not just weak players, they’re very weak human beings. You can’t say a word to them.

“I know the game has changed a little bit, but the players do get away with murder and it’s really frustrating.

“It wouldn’t have happened in our dressing room because of the fact we have good characters and good leaders. We wouldn’t have tolerated lads not putting a shift in.”
