Liverpool welcome Newcastle United and former boss Rafael Benitez on Boxing Day.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were given an early Christmas present when title rivals and defending champions Manchester City fell to a shock 2-3 home defeat to Crystal Palace over the weekend.
It subsequently meant The Reds, who already headed the championship going into the midpoint of the season, watched their lead atop of the Premier League grow to four points.
Such has been their recent league form – Liverpool are on a seven-match winning streak – Klopp and company will be expected to at least maintain that deficit against an inconsistent and struggling Newcastle team.
Benitez, who famously secured Liverpool’s fifth European Cup, has only picked up one win from The Magpies previous five league outings.
Before that, they had racked up three consecutive wins, but a downturn in fortunes sees them lie in 15th place and just five points above the relegation places.

Liverpool boss Klopp – already missing Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – has provided a positive update on the fitness of Naby Keita and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The Guinean midfielder was forced off in Friday’s win at Wolves but trained with his teammates on Monday.
Alexander-Arnold has also returned to training having missed the previous two Premier League matches.
With games coming thick and fast, The Reds face Arsenal on Saturday, there’s a temptation to make wholesale changes from the starting line-up he fielded in their 2-0 win over Wolves.
As for Newcastle, no fewer than four players are out for Benitez: Ki Sung-Yeung has departed for the Asian Cup whilst Ciaran Clark, Karl Darlow and ex-Red Jonjo Shelvey are nursing injuries. Florian Lejeune, meanwhile, is a doubt.
Benitez, renowned for his pragmatism, is expected to field the 5-4-1 formation he’s often used against the league’s big boys.
