Icardi turned down a move to Serie A rivals, says player's wife

Mauro Icardi’s agent, Wanda Nara, claims Inter Milan wanted to sell him to Juventus and the Nerazzurri have not offered him a new contract.

Nara, who is also Icardi’s wife, appeared frustrated when talking about her husband’s contract issues earlier this week, and says his contract “has to be renewed.”

Does Icardi have a future at Inter? Five things to know…

  1. Icardi joined Inter from Sampdoria in 2013 and has played himself into the hearts of the Nerazzurri fans
  2. Over the last four campaigns Icardi has scored 91 goals in 137 games in Serie A.
  3. Icardi is Inter’s top scorer this season, with 9 goals in 13 Serie A games.
  4. But, according to the player’s wife, Inter tried to sell Icardi to Juventus in the summer.
  5. The Argentine has scored 13 goals in 19 games across all competitions this season and 120 goals in 201 appearances for the club.

“Mauro renewed his agreement with Nike for another 9 years in London,” she told Tiki Taka (via Football Italia).

“Inter? We’re very far apart. What’s been written in the last few days annoys me. No-one’s called me to ask for any explanations.

“Icardi is a footballer whose quality can’t be disputed. His contract must be renewed, period.”

Nara says the priority is to renew their contract with Inter, though, she claims that she hasn’t sat down and talked to them yet.

“The market? It’s better if I don’t talk about it, although it makes me laugh when I hear that Icardi isn’t on the market.

“With Inter it’s not an issue of money. I think they can pay for his renewal, which remains the priority for us.

“The club contacted me in the midst of their Champions League campaign, but I said it was better to wait until after the group stage.”

Nara added: “You saw how much I wanted us to go through and how much I cried. Inter’s offer doesn’t exist. I have to sit down and talk to them and I haven’t done that yet.

“Inter have their Christmas dinner on Tuesday and I think they’ll kill me, so I’ll bring something from home with me.

“Inter wanted to send Icardi to Juventus, but it was Mauro who said ‘no’ as he wanted to stay at Inter.”

Where could Icardi end up if Inter don’t renew?

If the Argentina international has already rejected a move to Juve, where else could the striker head to if the Nerazzurri do not renew his contract?

According to reports, Inter are due to face financial penalties from UEFA for breaching Financial Fair Regulations. UEFA allegedly informed the Italian giants they need to raise £44 million to balance their books or risk facing sanctions.

Icardi, who has a £90 million release clause in his contract, would plug that financial gap and raise even more money as the prolific striker will likely fetch a far higher asking price. Nara claims her husband is worth a staggering £176m.

Premier League sides Manchester United and Chelsea have been heavily linked with the player. Both clubs are currently without a striker that can consistently find the net, with Alvaro Morata and Romelu Lukaku only finding 11 goals between them in the Premier League this season.
