Lampard 2.0 & the winger Chelsea crave: how two of Spurs ‘Fantastic Four’ made rival fans jealous v Everton

With Manchester City and Chelsea losing on Saturday, Tottenham Hotspur had a chance to further themselves away from fourth while edging close to second in the Premier League.

While all eyes have been on Liverpool leading the way at Christmas, Spurs continue to slowly creep up the table with impressive performances coming week after week.

When Everton took the lead after 20 minutes through former Arsenal man Theo Walcott, Spurs fans may have been fearing the worst. On the four occasions Tottenham had been behind this season prior to the match, Mauricio Pochettino’s men had failed to recuperate a single point.

But, having also failed to win on their two previous Sunday games this season, Spurs decided Goodison Park would not be the site of their downfall, coming back to win 6-2.

The turn around was largely thanks to their attacking quartet of Son Heung-min, Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen all scoring in the same game for the first time, which was starting to make some opposing fans jealous.

But exactly how well did the quartet do?

Son Heung-min

There was a lot of good fortune in the build up to Son Heung-min’s equaliser, but nothing should be taken away from the South Korean.

Chasing a pass from Harry Kane, Son looked to be losing the battle to Kurt Zouma. But Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford felt he was the better option to clear the ball, eventually colliding with Zouma giving Son an option goal.

But the angle was not the best and Son still had to produce an excellent finish which just skimmed the underside of the crossbar before going in.

The goal was the fifth Son has been directly involved in in the Premier League in his past six appearances,

And, as Everton threatened to get back into the game at 4-2, Son gave Spurs breathing space once more, just about beating the offside line to finishing coolly through Pickford’s legs when one-on-one.

The South Korean then played a part in Spurs’ next goal, setting up Kane for the cherry on the top.

But, as ever with Son, it wasn’t just about the goals. The South Korean’s work-rate and selflessness was second to none on the pitch, with his footballing intelligence helping to fill the gaps left by Harry Kane as his drops deep.

The performance even earned him plaudits from rival fans, as one Chelsea supporter admitted his desire in seeing Son at the Blues.

Spurs are really going to miss him when he’s away.

Dele Alli

Have Tottenham cloned Frank Lampard?

Dele Alli has been likened to Lampard before, for his goalscoring record from midfield. Prior to Sunday’s game, the 22-year-old had scored 75 club goals for Tottenham Hotspur (51) and MK Dons (24).

But against Everton Alli showed once again that his ability playing style are also worthy on comparisons to Lampard.

In the ascendancy after drawing level, Spurs attacked down the left flank with Son firing a shot at Pickford, which was saved.

But the ball bounced towards the edge of the box with some of the Everton defenders stood watching to see what would happen next. One man who was not standing still, however, was Alli who had begun his late run into the area.

As soon as he had started, there was only going to be one result, with Alli drilling the ball low and hard through Pickford and into the back of the net.

A real Lampard-esque finish, like Son, Alli scored his second goal in four days and took his tally for the season to six.

Unfortunately for Alli and Spurs, the midfielder had to be taken off at half-time after suffering a bad tackle from Pickford shortly before the break.

Harry Kane

For the first 41 minutes of the match it was beginning to look like it wasn’t Harry Kane’s day in front of goal.

The England captain had taken four shots during that time, none of which had hit the target, though one did just go over the top of the bar.

Kane did play a part in Tottenham’s first goal, as it was his excellent first-time pass which played Son in, causing a problem for Pickford and Zouma.

And, like any top level striker, Kane continued to get himself in the right positions waiting for the ball to drop kindly searching for a goal.

It came in the 42nd minute from a free-kick which Kieran Trippier lined up. Kane lurked in between the five-man Everton wall – the less said about them the better – and Tom Davies.

As Trippier took the kick Kane started his run so that, when the ball rebounded off the post, the striker was there unmarked to finish from eight yards out as Davies had not followed the movement.

Kane wasn’t done there, sliding to get Tottenham’s sixth 15 minutes from time, after quick attacking play from Ben Davies and Son.

The goals were Kane’s 10th and 11th in the Premier League for the season, with only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (12) scoring more.

Christian Eriksen

Like many at Spurs, Christian Eriksen is having the best spell of his career this season.

The Danish playmaker has recorded six assists in the Premier League so far, from 26 chances created, with his passing vital to Tottenham’s attacking play.

Eriksen played the initial pass to Kane in the build up to Son’s first goal and continued to find himself in the right places at the right times to help Spurs advance up the pitch.

Something which hadn’t been coming as frequently this season was goals, with the Dane managing just one prior to Sunday’s game.

But he added his second of the season shortly after half-time, with possibly the goal of the goal – fighting with Son’s first.

Seamus Coleman thought he had done a good enough job to head Kane’s cross out of the area, but it fell to Eriksen who cut slightly across the ball, sending it into the bottom right corner of goal with spin giving Pickford no chance.

It added to another all-round good performance from Eriksen, who also showed his defensive grit at times when Everton threatened to get back into the match with their attacking line eager to impress.
