Aleksandar Mitrovic left mortified by botched penalty in Serbia win over Montenegro

Fulham centre-forward Aleksandar Mitrovic has labelled himself “stupid” after his penalty miss in Serbia‘s victory over Montenegro.

Serbia were playing Montenegro in the Uefa Nations League and found themselves 2-0 up – including a Mitrovic strike – before winning a penalty just before half-time.

Up stepped Mitrovic who was clearly confident to get his second of the match and seal the win for his country.

Inspired by Memphis Depay’s penalty against France the day before, Mitrovic attempted a Panenka-style penalty which sailed high over the crossbar.

Admitting his embarrassment, Mitrovic told reporters (via Goal): “I have no idea why I’ve done that, I was watching Depay yesterday and decided at last moment. I am stupid…”

Montenegro managed to score later on in the match but Mitrovic will count himself lucky that Serbia were able to hold on to their lead and finish victors in the League C Group 4 clash.

Mitrovic’s miss is a minor bump in the road for Serbia who have enjoyed a successful Uefa Nations League campaign.

Following on from their disappointingly early Fifa World Cup exit this summer, Serbia have won three and drawn twice, sitting atop of Group 4 ahead of Romania, Montenegro and Lithuania.

A win against Lithuania on Tuesday will secure promotion to League B.
