Arsene Wenger: Why Alexis Sanchez is struggling at Man Utd

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes he knows the reason why Alexis Sanchez is struggling at Manchester United.

Wenger managed Sanchez during the Chilean’s four-and-a-half year stay in north London. But a much-publicised move in January 2018 has not worked out as well as many were expecting.

The United forward has failed to replicate his Arsenal form, scoring just three times in 20 appearances for Mourinho’s side.

The former Arsenal boss believes that Sanchez has “lost confidence” since moving north and that is why the player is yet to make his mark at Old Trafford.

During their time at Arsenal together the Chilean flourished, winning plenty of accolades from the fans and media alike. Sanchez bagged 60 goals in 122 Premier appearances while at the Emirates but the 29-year-old has not been able re-capture that form under Mourinho.

With talk of another move already circling, his former boss believes confidence is key to Sanchez’s success.

Wenger told beIN SPORTS: “I believe he has lost confidence.

“The strength of Alexis Sanchez is to take initiative to dribble and to take people on.

“Those are the players who are most vulnerable when they lose confidence their game is based on that and having that feeling to take initiative, he has lost that slowly.

“Since the start of the season he had a high level of physical energy but he has lost that as well.

“Certainly he is refreshed now because Mourinho left him out for a while.”

Sanchez grabbed a late winner against Newcastle as Manchester United came from two goals down to win but he has only been used sparingly since.

He has featured in the last two games, a victory over Bournemouth and the win in Turin against Juventus in the Champions League but will be hoping this run of starts continues.

United face Manchester City on Sunday in the Manchester derby as they look to close the gap on the leaders.
