Former Atletico Madrid winger, Yannick Carrasco has reportedly been offered to Arsenal with a potential return to Europe possible this month.
Carrasco has spent the last year playing his football in the Chinese Super League with Dalian Yifang and is apparently in talks with the north London club, according to Sky Sports.
How much would Carrasco cost & do Arsenal need him? Five things to know
- The cost for the Belgian winger is believed to be £25m, but it is understood he could demand a wage in the region of £170,000 per week.
- Carrasco joined Dalian Yifang from Atletico Madrid for £26.5m last February after three years in the Spanish capital.
- The winger helped Belgium to third place in the 2018 World Cup. However, he primarily played as a wing-back.
- Arsenal currently have a shortage of wingers at the club. Central players like Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aibameyang and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have covered there.
- Arsenal have also been heavily linked to Barcelona’s Denis Suarez, a central midfielder who is also capable out wide.
In China, it is believed that Carrasco currently earns around £9,000,000 per year (£173,ooo per week) but he is open to taking a pay cut to join Arsenal. At 25-years-old, Carrasco has time on his side and this move looks as if it could be coming at the right time for him.
This season, Unai Emery hasn’t been blessed with a plethora of wingers at Arsenal. Often times it is unknown whether he will go into matches with a system favouring either wingers or wing backs.
When using wingers, however, Arsenal often play Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alex Iwobi or Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the wide areas. Although Aubameyang possesses great pace, the other two aren’t natural wingers. What’s more, Mkhitaryan is currently out injured.
With all of that in mind, Emery could be tempted to bring Carassco to the club. However, Arsenal do have a limited transfer budget as reported by Belgian journalist, Kristof Terreur, who added context to the news.

While at Atletico, manager Diego Simeone spoke highly of Carassco, saying: “He is a very complete player with a bright future ahead of him. He is on the path and getting even better.”
Arsenal are also said to be heavily interested in Barcelona playmaker Denis Suarez. The Spanish midfielder’s contract expires in 2020 and Barcelona don’t look likely to be giving him an extension.
Looking to cash-in, the Spanish giants look most likely to sell to Arsenal. According to The Mirror, Arsenal could go ahead with a loan deal which would become a permanent £15m transfer in the summer.
One thing going for Arsenal in this move is that Emery already has a relationship with Suarez after the Spaniard’s loan spell at Sevilla in the 2014-15 season.
West Ham were also in for the midfielder’s services but it is believed Suarez rejected the Hammers in order to reignite the fire he and Emery had at Sevilla where they won the Europa League together.
Do Arsenal need Carrasco and Suarez?
Going into the second half of the season, Arsenal have a fairly depleted squad. This has especially been the case out wide as well as in defence where Arsenal can’t seem to play centre-backs consistently.
On the whole, Carrasco looks like he could be a signing that Arsenal need. A real winger who is able to test his full back isn’t something that Arsenal possess at the moment.
Bringing a traditional winger to the club could help them add yet another dimension to their attack. With Reiss Nelson coming back in the summer too, which could be encouraging for Arsenal fans going forward.
As for Suarez, he would replace Aaron Ramsey, who is expected to leave by the summer. With Suarez, Arsenal will have a creative, attacking midfielder to fill the void left by the Welshman should he leave.
However, if just one player was to join the club, it would seem Carrasco would make more sense.
