Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has revealed former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo has congratulated him for his Uefa Player of the Season award.
Modric won the award during the draw for the 2018/19 Champions League group stage, beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah who had both also starred in runs to the final of the competition for Real Madrid and Liverpool respectively.
Ronaldo had been named as Forward of the Season for his 15 goals in 13 Champions League games but was not present to pick up his award amid speculation of unhappiness at his snub for the big prize.
But Modric has now confirmed Ronaldo messaged him, insisting the Croatian was deserving of the award.
“I’m happy to be in the finalists [of The Best] and what happens, it will happen. There are people to decide,” he told Portuguese news channel RTP3 (via Record).
“I have a good relationship with Ronaldo, he will continue in the same. For me, individual prizes are important but more important I’m not obsessed with it, we’ve already talked about it, he sent me a message to congratulate, said he was happy and that I deserved it, and he said that he wanted to see me soon.”
After helping Real Madrid to their fourth Champions League in five years, Modric went on to lead Croatia to their first ever World Cup final, though they would ultimately lose to France 4-2.
The midfielder is currently part of the Croatian squad set to play Spain in the Uefa Nations League on Tuesday.
Luka Modric’s excellent summer
Winning the Champions League with Real Madrid in Kiev would be the start of an excellent summer for Croatian midfielder Modric as he would push himself to the top of world football.
Modric played all seven of Croatia’s games en route to the World Cup final, scoring twice and recording one assist.
His performances earned him the World Cup’s Golden Ball and saw him shortlisted for Fifa’s Best Men’s Player award, once again alongside Ronaldo and Salah.
