De Ligt will leave Ajax eventually, says Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman has suggested it won’t be long until Dutch starlet Matthijs de Ligt leaves Ajax.

De Ligt has emerged as one of most promising young players in Europe over the last two seasons. The 19-year-old has already made 11 appearances for the senior Holland team.

His performances have seen him linked with Barcelona and Tottenham, but De Ligt opted to stay with Ajax over the summer.

But Koeman, who took over as Netherlands manager earlier this year, believes De Ligt will move to one of Europe’s top five leagues eventually.

“It’s clear that a player like Matthijs de Ligt will decide at one point or another to take a step forward into a higher league,” Koeman said in a press conference, according to Marca.

“It will be a move to a higher level, although it’s unfortunate that players are increasingly leaving Holland younger and younger.

“I’ve talked to Matthijs about the fact he thinks he doesn’t feel fulfilled in a league like the Dutch one, you can imagine the feeling when you play your first Champions League match and then go to play a league match away at Excelsior on an artificial pitch.”

De Ligt’s career so far

De Ligt made his Ajax debut four days before his 17th birthday. He is the second-youngest goalscorer in the history of the club behind Clarence Seedorf.

In total, De Ligt has made 83 appearances for Ajax, scoring eight goals. This season, he has played 11 times in the Eredivisie, scoring once and providing one assist.

For his country, De Light has played 11 times but is yet to open his international goalscoring account.

He could line up alongside Virgil van Dijk when Holland face France in the UEFA Nations League on Friday.
