Santiago Solari’s uncle, Jorge, believes that you need to have “won trophies and earned a lot of money” to manage the Real Madrid dressing room.
Jorge Solari, who was also a professional footballer in Argentina in the 1960s and 70s, was speaking to Radio Mitre (via Football Espana) in Argentina about his nephew’s appointment and thinks that, because the club attracts the very best in players in the world, the manager must have an equally big name in order to earn respect in the dressing room.
The 77-year-old said: “It’s a really difficult and demanding job of course, but to manage that dressing room you need to have won trophies, to have earned a lot of money.
“The players who come to Madrid are in this bracket, we are talking about the very best players in the world, so you need to have clout of your own to manage all that.”
Regardless of the task ahead of Santiago Solari, his uncle is still very proud of his nephew’s achievements and believes that the Real Madrid manager’s job is the family’s ‘greatest honour yet’.
He added: “We are a family with a lot of football tradition and this is the greatest honour yet.”
Santiago Solari’s Real Madrid playing career
If Jorge Solari believes a Real Madrid manager must have a big trophy haul in order to earn the respect of the players, his nephew Santiago shouldn’t have a problem in that regard.
The 11-time Argentina international controversially moved to the Bernabeu from Atletico Madrid in 2000 and remained with Los Blancos for five seasons.
The midfielder made almost 150 appearances for Real during that time, scoring 22 goals and winning two La Liga titles and the 2002 Champions League in the process.
After departing for Inter Milan in 2005, Solari went on to win three-straight Serie A titles and a Coppa Italia crown at the San Siro.
