Eden Hazard: Kylian Mbappe deserves Ballon d’Or more than me

France and Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe deserves to win this year’s Ballon d’Or, according to Chelsea star Eden Hazard.

With both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi failing to inspire at the World Cup this summer, and Luka Modric already winning Fifa’s The Best Men’s Player award, the Ballon d’Or is as open as it has been for almost a decade.

Alongside Modric, Messi and Ronaldo, the names of Hazard and Mbappe among others have made it to the shortlist for the award for their starring roles at the World Cup and continuation into the new season.

But Hazard does not back himself to win the Ballon d’Or, instead believing teenager Mbappe should come out on top for helping France win the World Cup.

“Even though I had a very good year, we have to keep our feet on the ground,” Hazard told RTBF, as reported by FourFourTwo.

“I do not deserve the Ballon d’Or. I think there are players who have been better than me.

“I would have said Luka Modric, but he plays a little less well since August or September, so if we take into account the beginning of the season, I would say Kylian Mbappe.

“The goal for me is not to have the Ballon d’Or, it is to maximise fun on the pitch. If I win it one day, so much the better, if I don’t it, it will not be a problem.”

After scoring four goals at the World Cup in the summer including one in the 4-2 win over Croatia in the final, Mbappe leads the way in Europe’s top five leagues with 11 goals for PSG.

But the exciting teenager could do nothing to prevent France from losing 2-0 to the Netherlands in the Uefa Nations League on Friday, their first defeat since winning the World Cup.

Mbappe vs Hazard

Exciting forwards, both Mbappe and Hazard have been setting their respective leagues alight this season.

Hazard has scored seven goals in 11 Premier League games this season, with only Sergio Aguero (eight) managing more so far. But the Belgian is still some way behind Mbappe whose 11 goals in Ligue 1 have come at an impressive average of 1.32 per 90 minutes having played nine games.

The Frenchman has also had more efforts on goal at an average of 4.69 per 90 compared to Hazard’s 3.45.

However, Hazard does still have the advantage over Mbappe with regards to creativity in their respective leagues this season.

Hazard has recorded four assists to Mbappe’s three at a slightly better average of 0.46 per 90, while also creating more chances with 3.56 per 90 compared to Mbappe at 1.68.

The Belgian also beats his man more often, completing 3.33 take-ons per 90 with Mbappe completing 2.65.
