Tianjin Quanjian threaten legal action as Anthony Modeste returns to Bundesliga

Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian have threatened to take legal action against Anthony Modeste and Cologne after the German side announced they had signed the striker.

Modeste initially joined Tianjin Quanjian from Cologne in 2017 for a reported £25.8m having scored 45 goals in 73 games for the German club.

In his sole year in China, Modeste scored 16 goals in 29 games to help Tianjin Quanjian finish fourth in the 2017 Chinese Super League.

But Modeste has not played for the Chinese side since a reported contract dispute in August, appealing for an early termination which is yet to be resolved by FIFA.

Despite all this, Modeste was announced by Cologne as a new signing on Saturday, with the 2. Bundesliga side confirming he had joined on until 2023.

Speaking on his announcement, to the club’s website, Modeste said:”I am grateful and happy that I can return to 1. FC Köln and my boys.

“The club have been very concerned about me and helped me tremendously in the past weeks after my return from China.

“I really want to repay this support and trust and do my part to make the club successful. I can not wait to get up for the club again.”

However, shortly after the announcement was made, Tianjin Quanjian released a statement of their own reminding both Modeste and Cologne that the 30-year-old is still registered with the Chinese Super League side, while also confirming legal action will be taken if necessary.

“Modeste joined Tianjin Quanjian in 2017 and signed a contract valid until the end of 2020. Since August 2018, Modeste has left the team while remaining a registered player and he appealed to FIFA for an early termination of the contract,” the statement read, as reported by FourFourTwo.

“Tianjin Quanjian has actively responded to the lawsuit, relying on the facts to reasonably refute the unreasonable demands of the player.

“Before FIFA made a decision, the club regretted the misjudgement of Cologne in signing Modeste and reminded Cologne that it might be responsible for breach of contract with the player.

“Tianjin Quanjian firmly believes that FIFA will make a fair decision on this case, and the club will take all measures to safeguard our legitimate rights and interests. Also, the club has made further preparations, to file a legal proceeding against Modeste and Cologne at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”
