Explained: Why Matteo Guendouzi will miss Liverpool clash despite League Cup rule changes

Arsenal face Liverpool this weekend in the Premier League with both teams in red-hot form at the start of this current campaign.

The Gunners are currently on a 12-match unbeaten run which saw them win 11 games in a row in all competitions before drawing with Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace 2-2 last Sunday at Selhurst Park.

For Liverpool, they remain unbeaten in 10 Premier League games and currently occupy second place in the league, behind reigning champions Manchester City merely due to goal difference.

The two clash this weekend but one man who is unable to pull on his Arsenal strip is summer signing Mattéo Guendouzi, who is suspended for the fixture.

The Frenchman was sent off in Unai Emery side’s 2-1 victory over League One outfit Blackpool at the Emirates in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

But why can’t he play in the Premier League?

The 19-year-old was dismissed in the 56th minute after picking up his second booking during the Gunners’ narrow victory over the Seasiders.

At the beginning of the season, the Football Association announced that yellow cards received will no longer be carried across varying football competitions, staying specific to each competition the booking is awarded in.

However, they also noted that red cards do not carry the same weight and would, therefore, be transferable between competitions.

According to Metro, the updated FA ruling reads: “Cautions received in these competitions will therefore not count in the caution tally for the 5/10/15 sanction process.

“It should be noted this regulation is for cautions only and dismissals remain unaffected.”

This means that although Guendouzi was awarded two yellow cards outside of a Premier League fixture, the resulting red card now applies to Arsenal’s next fixture which is this Saturday at home to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
