Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has admitted Sir Alex Ferguson hated United’s grey 1995/96 away kit.
United would eventually win the Premier League in the 95/96 season, but before the end of that campaign they suffered a now infamous wardrobe malfunction against Southampton at the Dell.
United had a particularly unattractive grey strip that season which was quite unpopular with their fans as well as Sir Alex.
The Red Devils were sporting their bleak threads when they took on Southampton at the end of that season. United went into the dressing room at the break 3-0 down. Attributing their poor first-half fortunes to the mirky colours of their kit, Ferguson ordered his players to play the second half in a blue and white strip.
Recalling the incident, Neville claims there was logic behind Ferguson’s radical half-time change.
“He hated that kit but there is a science behind it. Sir Alex had employed a professor on sight, a vision specialist,” Neville said speaking on the Quickly Kevin, Will He Score? podcast.
“She brought in a lot of eye and alertness exercises and said to Sir Alex to imagine a crowd behind you, there are colours you can see more than others.
“It is the reason people wear bright yellow on a motorway. She believed when you saw these grey kits that the players won’t pick each other up at a distance.”
United had dominated games in grey and Neville added that Ferguson’s decision was more of an attempt to divert negative attention from the players.
“It had been going on for months and he had rejected this kit a couple of months before. He wasn’t having it.”
“When some of us made mistakes, it was ideal for him,” Neville added.
“He was a master of distraction and taking the headline away from the players.”
Manchester United are back in action next Saturday against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
