Former Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas ponders if staying at Spurs in favour of heading to Paris Saint-Germain was a mistake.
Villas-Boas took Spurs to fifth place during the full season he completed in north London, but the Portuguese tactician seems to regret that he didn’t take up the offer at PSG.
Despite those feelings, Villas-Boas has fond memories of his time at White Hart Lane and hails the spirit of his small squad.
“The first season was magnificent in all aspects. We had a ‘short’ squad in terms of depth, but a great spirit and so much will,” he said (via Goal).
“We picked up the most points in Spurs’ history with an incredible Bale who played behind Adebayor where he was free to move, but also with Lennon and Walker who allowed us to have a good counter-attacking 4-4-2.
“I got an offer from Paris Saint-Germain, who wanted me, but I said no out of love for Tottenham. Maybe that was a mistake.”
He added: “In April, we started planning for the next season.
“I offered some names to buy and sell, but during the transfer window, the board didn’t listen and quickly destroyed everything we’d created.”
The 31-year-old went on to manage Zenit Saint Petersburg and Shanghai SIPG, but has since diverted his career in the dugout to a rally car.
Villas-Boas competed in the 2018 Dakar Rally driving a Toyota Hilux but has to withdraw from the race after crashing into a sand dune injuring his back.
Nine months ago the Portuguese manager revealed that he intended to return to football management, but said returning to the Premier League was not in his plans.
“I want to go back, yes. To Portugal, at the moment, no. Germany, France, Spain, Italy … Championships I have not tried,” Villas-Boas said via HITC.
“Back to England is not in my plans. It was a good experience both personally and professionally, but without titles. If Germany is at the top of the list? Yes, I think so.”
Spurs return to Premier League action next Saturday when they take on London rivals Chelsea.
