The agent of AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini has played down recent speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United suggesting he doesn’t live for the financial rewards football brings.
Pellegrini, 22, was heavily associated with the 20-time English champions during the summer but nothing came off it as United would endure a frustrating summer transfer window leading to reported tension between executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and manager Jose Mourinho.
The rise of Pellegrini. Five things you need to know…
- Pellegrini made his professional debut aged 18 in 2015 after he came through Roma’s youth system.
- He joined Sassuolo after it became clear first-team opportunities were few and far between.
- His performances earned him an international call-up against Liechtenstein in June 2017.
- Pellegrini then returned with Roma now managed by his former Sassuolo boss Eusebio Di Francesco.
- Pellegrini is an integral part of Di Francesco’s team due to his versatility and tactical acumen.
Any chance of Pellegrini swapping Rome for Premier League football is seemingly remote according to agent Giampiero Pocetta who feels the only discussion surrounding him at this moment should be his impeccable performances of late.
“If I have to talk about Lorenzo right now the only thing I can talk about is his extraordinary form,” he told Corriere dello Sport.
“He’s getting what he deserves on the pitch, and the rumours about the transfer market have never distracted him nor disturbed him.
“Manchester United? I’m sorry that rumours have spread about financial aspects relating to him and his team-mates. It doesn’t matter for Lorenzo. He doesn’t live for meetings, especially financial ones.”
Where can Pellegrini fit at Old Trafford?
Just by looking at the various roles Pellegrini has performed in a Roma jersey and you can start to understand why Jose Mourinho would be enamoured.
Pellegrini, who combines stamina with skill, has been fielded in numerous roles since returning home; they are as follows: wing-back, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder and in his natural central midfield position.
His versatility, which can be a curse for some, has enabled Eusebio Di Francesco to utilise him in different formations as Roma look to bridge the gap to champions Juventus as well as become a permanent force in Europe.
A player of Pellegrini’s ilk could help Mourinho plug a few gaps in his team. For example, he’s equally comfortable playing in midfield alongside Paul Pogba or out on the flanks instead of Ashley Young.
To date, Pellegrini has played no fewer than 51 times for his boyhood club registering five goals and creating a further 10 for his teammates.
