Edinson Cavani tells press to stop playing up feud with PSG teammate Neymar

Edinson Cavani has told reporters to stop playing up a feud between himself and Paris Saint-Germain teammate Neymar.

The pair recently squared off against each other when Uruguay and Brazil played an international friendly at the Emirates Stadium.

Cavani and Neymar. Five things you need to know…

  1. Cavani finished the 2016/17 season as Ligue 1’s top scorer with 35 goals.
  2. Paris Saint-Germain made Neymar the world’s most expensive footballer in summer 2017.
  3. September 2017: The pair clashed over a penalty in a league match against Lyon.
  4. Cavani and Neymar both say they have no problems with each other.
  5. November 2018: Cavani is shown a yellow card following a challenge on Neymar in Brazil’s 1-0 win over Uruguay.

Brazil ran out narrow 1-0 winners, Neymar scoring from the spot, but much of the post-match discussion centred on a Cavani challenge on Brazil’s number 10 which saw his name go in the book.

This didn’t escape the attention of French media and Cavani wasn’t amused following Uruguay’s latest defeat against the world champions.

“Neymar? You need to stop this. It’s you the media that are creating something from nothing,” he told reporters (via Goal).

“On the outside, everybody has his own life. On the inside, everyone works for the best interests of the club.”

How deadly is the duo of Neymar and Cavani?

Even if they are not good friends it’s not like Cavani and Neymar are the first footballers to not have an off-field relationship. As the Uruguayan marksman points out it’s what they do on the pitch that matters and it’s fair to say, domestically at least, both have contributed to PSG’s recent successes (even though Neymar missed the backend of last season due to injury).

Both, alongside teenage sensation Kylian Mbappé, form one of Europe’s most deadly forward lines. Cavani, a predatory number nine, is often flanked by the nimble Neymar and Mbappé but not as much this season for one reason or another. Their efforts in front of goal – Mbappé (11), Neymar (10), Cavani (8) – has been a huge factor behind PSG’s record-breaking start.

Under the leadership of former Borussia Dortmund tactician Thomas Tuchel, the Parisian giants have won their opening 13 league games, surpassing the ‘big five’ record of 11 that was set by Tottenham Hotspur in the 1960/61 season, but the German coach might be without Neymar and Mbappé who ended their final international match of 2018 hurt.

But going back to Cavani and Neymar, no doubt there’s a click, as the numbers show. To date, both have played 35 matches together and combined for 14 goals: Neymar assisting Cavani 10 times whilst Cavani creating four goals for Neymar.

QUIZ: Can you name every player to ever score 4 or more goals in a single Champions League fixture?

Despite their prolific streak neither Cavani or Neymar have managed to bag four or more goals in a single Champions League game. No fewer than 12 players have. Can you name them all? Let us know how you get on in the comments below or through Twitter @Squawka.
