‘My players refuse to play’ – Thierry Henry demanding more after tough start at Monaco

AS Monaco manager Thierry Henry has bemoaned his side’s lack of desire following their 1-0 loss away to Reims.

Henry, 41, was named as Leonardo Jardim’s successor midway through the recent international break after the Portuguese tactician was given his marching orders following the club’s dismal start to the season.

Monaco, after their opening 12 league matches, sit in the bottom three having collected just seven points and things haven’t exactly improved under Henry, who couldn’t believe what he saw in their latest setback.

“This defeat is more worrying than the previous ones because we did not know how to create in the game and we did not get an opportunity,” the former Arsenal man told reporters.

“Reims practically won all of their duels and played as they should at home. On our side, the desire was not there. We have the chance to end up at 11 against 10 while we are not in the game and we punish ourselves with this second yellow [for Pele, in the 71st minute].”

“It is a difficult situation and there are still many things to be done. After, if a gap is growing with the teams above us, it will start to be more complicated,” he added.

“The most important thing is to regain that confidence because the guys are not free. With the injuries we have, we must find a way and the best tactical scheme. Me too, I’m learning, it’s only been two weeks since I’ve been there.”

Henry’s beginnings

Returning to manage the club where his professional career began, this is Henry’s first managerial job. It hasn’t started as well as he would have liked. Monaco, whose struggles are real, is proving to be a tough gig for the former Arsenal and Barcelona striker.

He has currently presided over four matches in all competitions, starting away to RC Strasbourg Alsace, and the Monégasques are yet to pick up a victory under his watch.

They’ve lost twice, both coming in Ligue 1, away to the aforementioned Strasbourg (2-1) and Reims (1-0) – both occasions seeing Monaco end the game with 10 men.

A 1-1 draw in the Champions League at Club Brugge came before Monaco played out a 2-2 draw at home to Dijon. So far, they have averaged one goal every 90 minutes under Henry, while conceding 1.5 per game. Next up is the visit of Club Brugge in Europe’s premier club competition.
