Match preview
Tottenham’s games against Chelsea have always been fiery affairs, but in recent times the competitiveness and animosity between the two sides seem to have reached a new level.
With Tottenham rising up in the Premier League, this particular London derby has had more added to it with Chelsea and Spurs trading Premier League wins over the past two seasons.
In that spell, Tottenham have won at Stamford Bridge for the first time in 28 years in 2017/18 and also ended the Blues’ 13-game win streak in 2016/17.
And now, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have the chance to hand Chelsea their first defeat of the new Premier League season, bringing to and their 18-game unbeaten run in all competitions. At the same time, Spurs can overtake Chelsea in the league with a win, but the North London side have not fared too well against their top four rivals this year.
Taking on Liverpool and Manchester City, the top two in the league, so far this season Spurs lost both games without too much resistance and are up against a Chelsea side who play a similar style to the aforementioned teams.
It may not be the bad-blooded affair in May 2016 which secured the league for Leicester City, but Saturday’s game is set to be an important one.
Where can I watch live?
Tottenham’s game against Chelsea can be viewed by UK residents on BT Sport 1, channel 413 on Sky and channel 527, for Virgin Media users. BT Sport subscribers can also watch the game online at sport.bt.com and via their BT Sport app.
The game is also available to watch on fuboTV for US-based viewers.
What is the latest with Tottenham’s new stadium?
After it was first made clear the opening of New White Hart Lane would be delayed, at the start of the season, Tottenham’s home game against Chelsea was earmarked to be the potential opening match.
But the stadium is still not ready, with Spurs recently coming up with a contingency plan to play the rest of the season at Wembley if need be. According to the Times, builders are planning on getting the stadium done with two fixtures in mind: either the Manchester United fixture on January 13 or the North London Derby against Arsenal in March.
Can Chelsea’s unbeaten start continue?
One of the talking points of the season so far has been Chelsea’s impressive start under Maurizio Sarri and what will happen once they taste defeat. Having overcome recent tests against Manchester United and Liverpool, earning draws from both games, Chelsea’s rivals present the next challenge for Sarri’s men.
Against Everton, before the international break, Chelsea showed vulnerability in both defence and attack with the Toffees adding to the blueprint of how to stop the Blues, by giving Jorginho very little space on the ball. If Spurs can replicate this at the weekend, they may hand Chelsea their first defeat.
Are Tottenham ready to take the next step?
One of the main criticisms of Mauricio Pochettino and his spell in charge of Tottenham has been his failure to deliver trophies to the club. As it stands, the last time Spurs won a trophy came with the 2008 League Cup – 10 years without glory.
The Argentine has definitely taken Spurs up a level, to become consistent contenders for the Premier League’s top four. But, to truly be remembered once his spell is over, Pochettino needs to deliver a trophy to the New White Hart Lane. The foundations are there, Spurs just need the killer instinct.
Head-to-head
Despite behind fourth in the Premier League, Tottenham have not been at their best this season, losing three times already including against top-four rivals Liverpool and Manchester City. Meanwhile, Chelsea have also come unstuck in games against the bigger sides, with two of their four league draws coming against Liverpool and Manchester United.
In the Premier League over the past two seasons, Chelsea and Tottenham have traded wins to keep the Blues ahead historically with 68 total victories to Spurs’ 52.
Tottenham wins: 52 Draws: 40 Chelsea wins: 68
Team news
Tottenham may have to take on rivals Chelsea without right-back Kieran Trippier, who had to withdraw from England duty with an injury.
Mateo Kovacic missed Croatia’s 2-1 Nations League defeat to England with a minor leg injury but should be back for Chelsea’s trip across London, though he may still only be on the bench given the form of Ross Barkley. Otherwise, Chelsea have no new injury concerns.
Predicted Tottenham XI: Lloris; Aurier, Foyth, Alderweireld, Davies; Dembele, Dier; Alli, Eriksen; Lucas, Kane.
Predicted Chelsea XI: Arrizabalaga; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso; Jorginho; Kante, Barkley; Willian, Morata, Hazard.

Predictions & Betting Tips
1. Draw @ 9/4
With so much on the line already, so early in the season, both Tottenham and Chelsea will not want to give away too much to their opponents.
As a result, it is likely to be a tight game at Wembley on Saturday, especially following an intense international break for some of the players set to be involved.
There has not been a draw between Tottenham and Chelsea in their past five matches, but given the two teams’ previous performances against others around them, it could be the outcome.
Key Stat: Tottenham are the only side yet to draw in the Premier League this season.

2. Both teams to score @ 8/15
Despite each conceding fewer than a goal per game in the Premier League this season, both Chelsea and Tottenham have shown signs of defensive weakness.
Chelsea have been known to allow opponents too many big chances to score, but are yet to fully be punished with only the bigger sides truly making the most of their opportunities.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have previously come unstuck against similar level teams in Manchester City and Liverpool, who exposed Spurs’ weaknesses with their attacking style of play.
Key Stat: Both teams have scored in the past three games between Tottenham and Chelsea.

3. Harry Kane to score anytime @ 20/21
In England’s 2-1 win over Croatia on Sunday, Harry Kane ended his goalscoring drought for the Three Lions, not scoring since the World Cup.
Though he scored in the 3-2 win over Wolves at the start of the month, Kane has not enjoyed the best form in front of goal for Spurs in the Premier League with one goal in his past five games.
But, like he did for England, it is time for Kane to re-find the net for Spurs against one of their biggest rivals.
Key Stat: Harry Kane has scored three goals in eight Premier League games against Chelsea.
