Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar has revealed why he has so much admiration for Arsenal manager Unai Emery.
The two worked together for one season in Paris where the side dominated domestically following Neymar’s high-profile switch from Barcelona to PSG in summer 2017.
PSG won the domestic treble but the club’s poor showing in the Champions League spelt the end for Emery who moved to England this summer to take over from former Gunners manager Arsene Wenger.
Arsenal are flying in the Premier League, unbeaten in 16 games in all competitions, with Emery receiving praise from many who believe it is his work that has changed the fortunes of the club.
Neymar seemingly concurs, telling reporters he has a lot of time for his former coach and that Emery’s work ethic will make him a success at the north London outfit.
The Brazilian said (via ESPN): “Arsenal are playing really great football. They are coming from a great run in recent matches and everybody knows he’s a really great coach.
“I was really happy to work with him because he’s a really hard working guy.
“He really wanted to coach us and really wanted to study about football.
“I think he will bring good things for Arsenal, which is a really huge and important club here in England. I wish him luck.”
‘I wasn’t the leader’ – Emery on his time with Neymar at PSG
Despite Neymar’s praise, it was apparent the two men didn’t get on all of the time, with the power and leadership stripped from Emery and given to the Brazilian.
Neymar’s departure from Barcelona to PSG was seen as an attempt by the player to get out of Lionel Messi’s shadow and establish himself as the main man at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Speaking prior to his departure from France, Emery said: “One of the reasons Neymar left Barça is because the play was completely centred around Messi and Neymar was obliged to work for him.
“I know when I am the principal person in the group and when I am not. At PSG, the leader is Neymar. At Manchester City, it’s Pep Guardiola.
“My priority was to make Neymar happy, it didn’t matter how. Neymar arrived at PSG in order to be the leader, to live the necessary process to become number one in the world. At Man City, Pep is the leader. At PSG, Neymar needs to be the leader.”
So perhaps Arsenal have Neymar to thank for gifting them Emery?
