Paul Pogba would be Gennaro Gattuso’s ideal player to play against out of the modern-day crop of footballers.
The manager, who took over the reins at the San Siro last year and has since improved the outlook of the club’s players and prospects, was speaking about which players he wished he had the opportunity to face and play with.
The AC Milan boss revealed how we would have loved to have played with Luka Modric and battled with Juventus central-midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
“Everyone says Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, but I’d have loved to play with Luka Modric,” said the former Italy midfielder, via Football Italia.
“I think he’s an incredible player, really strong mentally and a pure footballer. Back in the day, there were some animals about, Edgar Davids, Dennis Wise, Paul Ince at the start of my career, players full of character.
“From the current era, I’d like to come up against Paul Pogba. Another player I like is Matuidi. It seems like he never stops running, he’s all over you.
“He wins back possession and makes tackles incredibly well.”
Known as a real midfield hardman, Gattusso was then asked who he would like to be played by if his career was turned into a Hollywood movie.
He joked: “Robert De Niro, I think. Looking at how I talk and gesticulate, as well as my physical movements and facial expressions.”
And when asked about the potential soundtrack to his life, he responded: “Soundtrack to my life? I think Ligabue’s song, ‘Una vita da mediano’ [Life as a midfielder]. When I hear that song, it sums up all the work I did for so many years.”
Gattuso’s career as a tough-tackling hatchet man
Gennaro Gattuso made a career out of being horrible in the centre of the park.
Tough-tackling, hard-working, always anticipating, the man from Corigliano Calabro also had a deceptively good long-shot on him that he unleashed sparingly.
Gatusso featured for Perugia, Rangers, Salernitana, AC Milan and Sion in a career that spanned three decades.
Gattuso won 73 caps for Italy – including a 2006 World Cup win on the way – and his stint at AC Milan included 10 major trophy wins, including the Champions League in 2003 and 2007.
He entered into management in 2013, beginning with former club Sion.
