Manchester City starlet Phil Foden has revealed his aspirations to follow in the footsteps of teammate David Silva.
Foden, 18, is one of the hottest prospects emerging out of City’s immaculate academy, and he has been hotly-tipped to cement a starting berth in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI during the coming seasons.
The talented teenager has found first-team opportunities scarce at the Etihad so far with a blockade of world-class talent preventing him from making the immediate impact many hoped he would.
However, Foden has previously stated his willingness to bide his time and impress Guardiola when given the opportunity, but he has also made no secret of his desire to emulate club legend Silva.
When asked which footballer he would most aspire to be, Foden told Sky Sports: “David Silva, because I’ve seen him come through at City.
“He’s been a great player for us and I’ve really enjoyed watching him.”
Silva has been a revelation since joining the club from Valencia in 2010, winning three Premier League titles, three Football League Cups, two Community Shields and one FA Cup.
He also won the club’s ‘Player of the Season’ accolade in 2017, and now Foden wants to succeed the Spanish magician at the Etihad, while also looking to emulate all he has achieved during his eight years at the club.
When asked whether he would like to replicate Silva’s achievements, Foden added: “Yeah, definitely.
“I watch him closely, he’s a great player and someone I want to be like in the future.
“Probably him and Lionel Messi. I’m my own player, but they are great players.
“They have great characters, they show that on the pitch, and impress me every time they play.”
Foden was speaking after receiving his first England U-21 call-up this month with Aidy Boothroyd naming the teenage tyro in his squad on Friday.
He played the full 90 minutes as the Three Lions humbled Andorra U21 7-0 at the Saltergate Stadium in Chesterfield on Thursday evening.
Boothroyd’s men next face a vital clash with Scotland in the UEFA European U21 Championship qualifiers on Tuesday.
