Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has branded Shkodran Mustafi the ‘king of blunders’ in the wake of the weekend’s north London derby.
The Frenchman has revealed how he was shocked to see Mustafi in the starting XI for the north London derby at Wembley.
Is Shkodran Mustafi really error prone? Four key things to know…
- Mustafi signed for Arsenal from Spanish side Valencia in 2016 for a reported fee of £35m.
- The German started at right-back against Spurs in the north London derby.
- Mustafi gave away a controversial penalty that gifted Tottenham an easy chance to equalise.
- Petit was surprised Mustafi was picked in his unfavoured position by Unai Emery.
Arsenal had the better of the latest north London derby but were forced to settle for a point after Harry Kane was bundled over by Mustafi, despite being offside in the build-up. The England striker duly converted the penalty giving Spurs an undeserved equaliser.
The mistake prevented the Gunners from picking up a vital three points in their quest to finish in the top four and saw them drop to fifth in the table, a point behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

Former Arsenal midfielder Petit questioned the decision to play Mustafi in such a big game, mainly because of his penchant for making errors at vital times.
“I was surprised to see Mustafi picked for that game because he is after all the king of blunders,” Petit told RMC Sport.
“Even though it shouldn’t have been a penalty because there was an offside, it’s Mustafi who gives away the penalty again.”
Arsenal missed a glorious opportunity to win the game when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed his own spot kick right at the death, making for a frustrating derby for the Gunners.
Is Emery the right man for Arsenal?
During a disappointing afternoon, a section of Gunners fans were left even more dismayed when Emery substituted Alexandre Lacazette despite the Frenchman looking lively.
Petit was also surprised by the Spaniard’s decision but pointed out a trend he believes has developed during the former Sevilla manager’s spell at the Emirates.
He added: “Emery steers the ship well but there are certain things in his management style that concern me. I hope I am wrong.”
Arsenal face a tough couple of fixtures before having a fairly favourable run-in. Manchester United arrive at the Emirates on Saturday before the Gunners go to Molineux but after that they will not have to face any of the current top seven.
