Chelsea have appealed against the recent transfer ban enforced on them by FIFA.
The London giants are at risk of being banned from signing players in the next two transfer windows, as well as being hit with a £455,000 fine, after being accused of breaching rules regarding overseas players under the age of 18, including their 2014 signing of Bertrand Traore.
Chelsea’s transfer ban: five key things to know…
- Chelsea have been accused of breaching article 19 of Fifa’s ‘regulations on the status and transfer of players’ in the case of 29 minor players.
- The three-year investigation by Fifa was initiated after the signing of Bertrand Traore in 2014.
- The Blues have been fined £455,000 and given 90 days to “regularise the situation”.
- Chelsea have now officially lodged an appeal to football’s governing body.
- FIFA have not confirmed whether or not the ban will be lifted while the appeal process is carried out.
Chelsea stated last month that they would be appealing the sanctions imposed upon them, which has now been confirmed by the footballing governing body.
“We can confirm that Fifa has received an appeal from Chelsea FC over the said case,” Fifa spokesman told the Mirror, although the governing body has not confirmed the scheduling process of the appeal, or if the sanctions would be lifted while it is in ongoing.

“Any decision on the sanction remaining in place during the appeal process is to be taken by the chairman of the Fifa Appeal Committee,” the Fifa statement added.
Chelsea completed the loan signing of Gonzalo Higuain, as well as a move for Christian Pulisic, who has remained on loan at Borussia Dortmund until the end of the season, before the ban was imposed.
What happens if the ban is upheld?
Despite having the knowledge that Pulisic will be arriving in the summer, as well as knowing they should still be able to trigger a permanent deal for Higuain, Chelsea have struggled for form in recent months and would have been relying on the summer window to allow Maurizio Sarri to strengthen his squad.
Should their ban be upheld after the appeal process, it may well come to pass that the Blues turn to some of the stars they have out on loan, of which there are no fewer than 41, to bolster their squad and add a little more quality to their ranks.

And while the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek could see an increase in playing time, the ban could be seen as a disaster for Eden Hazard, who has reportedly been a long-term target for Real Madrid and may see his hopes of a move severely dashed should Chelsea be unable to replace him.
