Jose Mourinho: Mohamed Salah was not prepared for life at Chelsea

Ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has spoken about letting Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah leave the club following his spell at Stamford Bridge.

Salah – now at Liverpool – is considered one of the most dangerous attacking players in the Premier League, with the Reds battling it out to win the Premier League title for the first time in 29 years.

Did Mourinho make a mistake? Five things you need to know…

  1. Mohamed Salah signed with Chelsea from Basel in 2013 for a transfer fee of £11 million.
  2. The Egyptian made only 19 appearances for the Blues, scoring just two goals.
  3. He was allowed to leave the club, joining AS Roma, where he played before moving to Liverpool for €42 million in 2017.
  4. Salah has scored 64 goals in 89 games for Liverpool.
  5. He broke the Premier League record for most goals in a single season (32 in 38 matches) in 2017-18.

Despite never getting a chance to showcase his abilities in the Chelsea starting eleven, former boss Mourinho clearly felt that Salah was not up to playing week-in-week-out for one of the Premier League’s biggest sides.

Shipped off to AS Roma, Salah has now developed into one of the world’s most talented forwards and is seemingly loving life in the red half of Merseyside.

Although Salah has proven his worth, Mourinho insists that he made the right call at the right time with the Egyptian, stating that the playmaker was too inexperienced and physically unprepared to make a name for himself in the Premier League.

Mourinho said: “I asked Chelsea to sign Mohamed Salah, he was inexperienced and not prepared physically to adapt to the style of play in Premier league.

“Now, he is physically and mentally strong and well adapted to Premier League because he went to Italy and gained experience.

“He is a wonderful person and I wanted him to stay at Chelsea but he was looking for more minutes.”

Liverpool’s race for the title

Salah has long forgotten his spell in west London and has far more pressing matters to consider at this time in his professional football career.

The 26-year-old is part of a Liverpool side who are trying to get their names in the Premier League trophy for the first time since 1990.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have drawn the last two away games 0-0 with rivals Manchester United and Everton respectively, with a thumping 5-0 victory at Anfield over Premier League surprise package Watford midweek.

Picking up just five points in the last three games has allowed title-challengers Manchester City to leapfrog above the Reds into top spot with just nine games remaining in the campaign.

The Reds’ next two fixtures in the Premier League come against Burnley and Fulham, with Klopp’s side under pressure to pick up maximum points in both games to ensure their title-bid stays on-track.
