Man Utd tipped to ‘run down the clock’ and sell Alexis Sanchez this summer

Alexis Sanchez will end his ‘shocking’ time at Old Trafford at the end of this season, according to Charlie Nicholas.

Having already suffered from thigh and hamstring injuries this term, the Chilean left the field with suspected knee ligament damage during Man Utd’s 3-2 win over Southampton on Saturday and looks set to be sidelined for four to six weeks.

Could Sanchez’ time at United be over? Five key things to know…

  1. Sanchez made a £30m move from Arsenal to United in January 2018.
  2. The Chilean scored 80 goals in 166 games for Arsenal but has just five for the Red Devils.
  3. The 30-year-old has missed 10 United games to date due to injury.
  4. Sanchez was forced off with another injury on Saturday and has been ruled out for four to six weeks.
  5. Charlie Nicholas believes United will cash in on Sanchez in the summer while they still can.

This latest setback is emblematic of Sanchez’ time in Manchester, with the former Barcelona man scoring just five goals in 41 appearances since making his £30m move from Arsenal in January 2018.

And ex-Gunners striker Nicholas believes his time at the club may finally come to an end once the season draws to a close.

“It’s been a shocker,” he told Sky Sports. “I watched Manchester United with interest at the weekend. Marcus Rashford played out wide of the right and when Romelu Lukaku is fit, he looks sharp.

“It looks like he’s trimmed a few pounds off him so the sharpness has returned so he’s the one that scares me, and Rashford’s pace.

“I think they’re running down the clock with Sanchez. I think he’ll be gone in the summer – that’s the reality.

“They’ll look at things and say ‘what have you done? Not very much’, and he gets injured a lot these days. You have to look at what United have got coming through and they’ve just given Martial a new deal so when he’s fit, he’ll be playing.

“Sanchez had the huff with Arsenal over a contract so what type of mood is he going to be in when he doesn’t get a game? I don’t think you hang about for that and I think Sanchez will be gone in the summer.

“They can sell him, get some money, get him off the wage bill and they can get somebody else in. It might even be a younger version.”

United’s season-defining week

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces what could be his most crucial week yet as Man Utd caretaker manager, with his first challenge coming in the form of an away trip to PSG in the Champions League round-of-16 second leg.

The Red Devils currently find themselves 2-0 down after the first leg and must try to overturn that deficit without key players such as Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard.

Following that, United then travel to the Emirates to face top four rivals, Arsenal, who sit just a point behind them in the Premier League table, with Solskjaer’s side currently occupying the final Champions League spot.

United have won all eight of their away games under Solskjaer’s management, bolstering their chances of success in both games, with Solskjaer quick to praise his players for their efforts.

“It’s an incredible achievement by the players,” Solskjaer told United’s official website. “They go into away games now knowing that we can defend well and we’ve got pace on the counter.

“They’ve been very confident away from home so hopefully we can take that to Paris because we have to – we’re playing against top, top players.”
