Maurizio Sarri: How Gonzalo Higuain needs to improve next at Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri has urged Gonzalo Higuain to improve his ‘acceleration’ in order to become a regular goalscorer for Chelsea.

The Argentina international completed a loan move to Stamford Bridge from Juventus in January but has notched just two goals in seven games so far.

Has Higuain flopped with Chelsea? Five key things to know…

  1. Higuain scored just eight goals in 22 games during a loan spell with AC Milan at the start of the season.
  2. The Argentina international moved to Chelsea on loan in January.
  3. He has failed to give Chelsea a goal threat so far with just two in seven appearances.
  4. However, he did score a Serie A record 36 goals in a single season for Napoli under Sarri in 2015/16.
  5. Sarri has urged the former Real Madrid man to improve his physical condition.

Sarri has still backed the 31-year-old to be a success in London but feels he needs to improve his physical condition in order for that to happen.

He said: “I think the contribution was really very good in the last match [against Tottenham]. He was able to play with team-mates very well.

“Now he needs more acceleration because now he is a little more resistant, but without the accelerations he had in Naples.

“So I think he needs to improve in the physical condition, and then he will be able to score.”

Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, just three points off the final Champions League spots.

The Blues have a London derby against Fulham on Sunday.

Kepa situation now closed, according to Sarri

Following his refusal to be substituted during last week’s League Cup final, Spanish goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, was dropped for Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

Deputy stopper Willy Caballero kept a clean sheet in that game, although Spurs failed to land a single shot on target, and Sarri is yet to decide who he will put between the posts against Fulham on Sunday.

The Italian did, however, insist the matter is now closed and that Kepa will remain his first-choice moving forward.

“The Kepa situation now is closed. Kepa is our first goalkeeper,” insisted Sarri. “But we are very happy for Willy, because now we know very well he is able to play in a very difficult match.

“I am sure in one of the two next matches, Kepa will be on the pitch.”
