Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer reminds David De Gea he owes Man Utd

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reminded goalkeeper David De Gea of the faith Manchester United previously showed in him amid ongoing contract talks.

De Gea arrived at Old Trafford 2011 and after an initially rocky start to life in the Premier League, the Spaniard has blossomed into one of the best goalkeepers in world football.

David De Gea’s contract situation: four key things to know…

  1. David De Gea signed for Man Utd in 2011.
  2. To date, he has made 349 appearances for the club and helped them win four major trophies.
  3. The Spaniard’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season.
  4. Caretaker manager Solskjaer has reminded De Gea of the faith United showed in him as talks continue.

The 28-year-old’s contract expires in the summer but with he and the club in negotiations over a new deal, Solskjaer took the opportunity to remind De Gea of the backing he received from Sir Alex Ferguson during his difficult adjustment period in England.

“No updates from me,” Solskjaer said of De Gea’s contract situation during a press conference. “The club and David are in dialogue, hopefully, they’ll agree. It’s out of my hands, but I’m sure we’ll do what we can.

“David’s done fantastic since he came, the club really showed how much they wanted him back in the day when Eric and the gaffer found him, there were probably ‘keepers there better at that time but the belief the manager showed in him with the criticism he got at the time paid dividends.

“He’s been player of the year I don’t know how many years, we’re grateful to have him. Then again, we’ve got Sergio [Romero] and Lee [Grant], fantastic goalkeeper department, I don’t think there’s any manager in the world who’ll beat me in that respect.”

De Gea has kept seven Premier League clean sheets this season and will have the chance to add to that when Man Utd host Southampton on Saturday.

Solskjaer: De Gea the best goalkeeper in the world

During his press conference, Solskjaer was asked by reporters to compare De Gea to two other goalkeeping greats for Man Utd: Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.

The Norwegian believes all three can lay claim to being the best goalkeeper in the world during their respective spells at Old Trafford.

“It’s difficult to compare them, but Edwin and Peter were never player of the year,” Solskjaer added. “David’s meant so many points for us over the years and I would say he’s the best goalkeeper in the world. Peter was at the time and Edwin at the time as well.

“I’m delighted with David and his personality is fantastic. He’s such a humble and confident boy.”
