Santiago Solari reacts to Real Madrid links with ex-Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho

Santiago Solari joked that Real Madrid ‘have more suitors than Julia Roberts’ when asked about a potential return for ex-boss Jose Mourinho.

Los Blancos crashed out of the Champions League at the round-of-16 stage on Tuesday, losing 4-1 at home to Ajax to seal a 5-3 aggregate defeat.

Who can take over at the Bernabeu? Five key things to know…

  1. Julen Lopetegui was sacked as Real Madrid manager after just 14 games in October.
  2. Santiago Solari took over but has seen Los Blancos crash out of two cups in one week.
  3. Real also lost 1-0 against Barcelona to fall 12 points behind the La Liga leaders.
  4. Former boss Jose Mourinho has recently been tipped with a return to Madrid.
  5. Solari joked that Real ‘have more suitors than Julia Roberts’ when asked about a Mourinho return.

With Solari’s appointment unplanned and recent results not going his way, the question of the Argentinian being replaced at the Bernabeu has been coming up more and more.

Mourinho himself has expressed a desire to resume his former role in the Real Madrid dugout, saying he would have ‘no issues’ returning to the club.

Solari, however, was less forthcoming when asked about the Mourinho rumours.

“At this club we have more suitors than Julia Roberts,” Solari joked when asked about Mourinho prior to the Ajax defeat.

“So you would need to ask her (about which coach the club would choose) and it is a pertinent question, but it is not for me.”

Real will return even stronger, says Solari

Real Madrid have crashed out of the Champions League and Copa del Rey in the space of a week, while a 1-0 La Liga defeat to Barcelona on Saturday has left Los Blancos 12 points behind their arch-rivals at the top of the table.

However, Solari has insisted he will not give up on his quest to turn fortunes around in the Spanish capital, insisting Real Madrid will ‘return even stronger’.

“I did not come to the club in such a difficult moment to give up,” Solari said.

“What we must do is remain as calm as possible in such a difficult moment and take it on with the best character.

“Madrid is bigger than any of us – it always returns – and returns even stronger.”

Real’s next game is away to Valladolid on Sunday.
