Molde attempt to clear up contract confusion – but Solskjaer’s clearly plotting Man Utd stay

Molde CEO Oystein Neerland remains confident Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will return to the Norwegian club in the summer despite the Manchester United interim manager suggesting his contract has expired.

United’s form under Solskjaer has made the former striker a candidate for the full-time job at Old Trafford, but Molde have attempted to clear up confusion surrounding his contract situation.

Has Solskjaer’s Molde contract expired? Five key things to know…

  1. United hired Solskjaer on an interim basis until the end of the season after Jose Mourinho was sacked in December.
  2. Solksjaer had been expected to return to Molde at the end of the season when his short-term deal with United expires.
  3. After a fine start at Old Trafford, Solskjaer has revealed he believes his contract with Molde has expired and he is under contract at United.
  4. Molde CEO Oystein Neerland claims otherwise, insisting Solskjaer signed a new deal until 2021 before Christmas.
  5. Solskjaer has lost just one of his 16 games in charge of United across all competitions and is said to be the front runner for the full-time job.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino was heavily linked with the full-time post at United immediately after Jose Mourinho’s sacking.

But such is the impact Solskjaer has made, it would be a surprise to see United look elsewhere for a new permanent manager – if they can prevent him from returning to Molde.

During an appearance on Norwegian podcast Fotballklubben, as reported by the Telegraph, Solskjaer suggested his contract with Molde has already expired.

“I’m not sure how it works,” he said. “I think the contract is expired and that I’m now under contract with Manchester United.

“I think we need a new contract there (at Molde).”

However, Neerland disputed Solskjaer’s claim on Norwegian television.

“Before Christmas we signed a new deal with Ole Gunnar for three more years, until 2021,” Neerland said.

“Since that Ole Gunnar has been appointed as caretaker manager at Manchester United, a position he will hold until this summer.

“Ole Gunnar is now employed at Manchester United and will return to Molde when the season is finished according to the plan.”

Solskjaer: “I will try to do the best job interview I have ever done”

Solskjaer has effectively admitted he wants the Manchester United job on a full-time basis once his short-term deal comes to an end.

The 46-year-old said he is treating his interim spell as a job interview during his appearance on Fotballklubben.

“I have this job until this season is over,” he added. “I haven’t heard anything else.

“I will try to do the best job interview I have ever done, and that’s why I enjoy my time here. I’m at a club where I know everyone. It’s natural.”
