Spurs labelled “lucky” as Arsenal fans point out how Vertonghen broke the rules

Tottenham Hotspur have been labelled “lucky” following their 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the north London derby.

Following a few disappointing results for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, they faced pressure to perform against Unai Emery’s side.

Spurs escape with a point: Five things you need to know…

  1. Spurs went into this match having lost on their previous two Premier League outings against Burnley and Chelsea.
  2. Arsenal went 1-0 up in the first half following an Aaron Ramsey finish, capitalising on poor Tottenham defending.
  3. Spurs were awarded a penalty in the second half following a foul on Harry Kane, which the England man converted.
  4. However, Kane was offside prior to the incident, meaning the penalty shouldn’t have been awarded.
  5. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s last-minute penalty was saved by Hugo Lloris but Arsenal fans were quick to point out that Jan Vertonghen broke the rules in the same incident.

One of the main talking points was the last-minute penalty which was saved by Lloris.

As Aubameyang stepped up to strike the ball, Vertonghen was well inside the penalty area, encroaching on play and breaking the rules. The Belgian’s advanced position meant he was able to tackle Aubameyang on the rebound, stopping the Gunners taking a late lead.

Former Newcastle United and England striker Alan Shearer believes that Spurs were extremely fortunate to escape without punishment and with a point to their name.

Shearer tweeted: “They were lucky to get a point!”

“Arsenal have been punished”

Spurs looked sluggish for the majority of the match and despite having more possession than their north London rivals, only managed to get three shots on target throughout the 90 minutes.

It wasn’t just the late Arsenal penalty where luck was on their side.

Their goal came from a foul inside the box on Kane who had been in an offside position prior to the foul.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown was livid with the Vertonghen incident which eventually denied the Gunners the chance to close the gap with Spurs to just a single point.

Keown said: “Look at [Jan] Vertonghen encroaching on the penalty. I mean look Arsenal have been punished today by the officials.

“VAR can’t come quick enough because the first goal Kane is offside and on the penalty Vertonghen is encroaching in the box.”

And he was joined in his anger by Arsenal fans on Twitter.
