Napoli open to Edinson Cavani return, says De Laurentiis

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has admitted Edinson Cavani would be welcome to return to the club should he wish to leave Paris Saint-Germain.

Cavani left Naples for Paris in 2013 after three years with the Partenopei, during which he formed part of their ‘Holy Trinity’ alongside Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi and won the 2012 Coppa Italia.

The Uruguay striker has since been on fire for PSG in Ligue 1, helping the side to four league titles in five years, as well as four French Cups and five French League Cups.

But Cavani is now being linked with a move away from the Parc des Princes, amid reports of a falling out with new manager Thomas Tuchel. And De Laurentiis says the doors would be open at Napoli for the forward, but only if he were willing to take a pay cut.

“Cavani is great,” he told Le Parisien in the build-up to Tuesday night’s Champions League 2-2 draw between PSG and Napoli. “He scored more than 30 goals each year with us.

“It depends only on him. The doors of Napoli are open to him.

“I am not a Qatari. So, if he does not want to play for Paris and he reduces his salary, we will find an agreement with the leaders of the PSG.

“Nobody wants to keep a player against his will.

“He is no longer a 24-year-old, but it is almost impossible for him to hurt himself, he is elastic. He can play until 38 years old.”

Cavani, 31, scored 104 goals in 138 games for Napoli including five in the 2011/12 Champions League season.

The Uruguayan would score 25 goals in his debut season, playing largely in a wide position he would occupy until Ibrahimovic’s departure for Manchester United in 2016.

In total, Cavani has scored 176 goals in 252 games for PSG so far, including 49 in 50 during the 2016/17 season and over 40 goals in the past two campaigns.
