Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has indicated he will not drop misfiring striker Romelu Lukaku to the bench despite his struggle for form in recent weeks.
The Belgian striker has four goals to his name this season, but his last strike came in United’s 2-1 Premier League win against Watford on September 15.
The Red Devils were beaten 1-0 by Juventus in their latest Champions League tie on Tuesday, with a goal from Paulo Dybala enough to separate the sides.
Mourinho’s side sit 10th in the Premier League table having picked up just 14 points from their opening nine matches.
Lukaku has come in for criticism for his form in front of goal and while Mourinho has admitted that the striker is finding things hard on the pitch, he has rejected the idea he could move Marcus Rashford into a central role to replace him.
“Could I play Rashford there? But then I don’t have a winger because in this moment we are in this difficult situation.” Mourinho told reporters on Tuesday night.
“He (Lukaku) is a hard-working guy, is a good professional, but one day the goal will arrive and the confidence will be back.”
“His moment is not sweet”
United have won just two of the last eight matches since Lukaku last scored a goal.
There was some positivity after their most recent Premier League match with Chelsea, with both Rashford and Anthony Martial impressing either side of the Belgian in attack.
Mourinho, though, has admitted that Lukaku needs to improve. When asked if he was concerned by his form, the United boss said: “Yeah. No critics at all, a complete understanding the player is a fantastic professional that wants to give everything for the team, but I have to agree his moment is not sweet.
“Not just with the goals that he is not scoring but also in his confidence, in his movement, in his touch, he is not linking the game well with the team. But he’s our striker and a good striker and a striker we believe in.”
