Mauricio Pochettino has admitted his Tottenham Hotspur side feel as though they’ve been playing away since they left White Hart Lane at the end of the 2016/17 season.
Tottenham demolished their former home so that a new stadium could be finished, as it overlaps part of the site of the old White Hart Lane.
They have been playing their home games at Wembley ever since, to a degree of success, with little discernible drop in results despite initial fears.
But that doesn’t mean the status quo of the past season and quarter hasn’t been difficult, according to Pochettino, who has said each game, even those at Wembley, hasn’t truly felt like a home game.
“It’s true it’s difficult to play with that feeling that you always play away from home,” Pochettino said, via ESPN.
“But that is the circumstance that we’ve talked about in the last few weeks, the last year, the last two years — that we need to manage and are managing a lot of different things that, sure, in the future will be completely different.
“Yes, when we signed our contracts [in the summer] we expected a tough period, but it’s tougher than we believed. We are spending more time than we think [away from home]. It’s sure that someone will benefit from our patience, our job, and playing many games away from home.”
Wednesday saw Spurs fail to win again in the Champions League, drawing 2-2 away to Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.
Up next for the Lillywhites is a tough task of facing defending champions Manchester City in the Premier League on Monday. The game begins a period of five games in just 12 days with the fixture initially having to be delayed due to Wembley’s double-booking for the NFL this Sunday with Spurs initially planned to be in their new stadium by now.
