Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has committed his long-term future to the club by putting pen-to-paper on a new five-year deal at Old Trafford.
Shaw, 23, would have seen his contract expire next summer but the left-back has ended speculation of a departure from the club by extending his stay in North West England.
Signed from Southampton in 2014, Shaw has not been able to excel at the club due to a number of injury complications, managerial inconsistencies and fitness issues, but he has started seven Premier League games already this season.
The London-born defender has also made two Champions League starts, and was rewarded for his promising early form with an England recall last month, playing against Spain in a Nations League match.
The contract will keep Shaw at the club until June 2023, and he spoke to the club’s official website about the new deal: “Since I came to United, it’s been a whirlwind four years that have passed so quickly. I am very proud to sign my new contract and continue my stay at this great club.
“I want to thank everybody that has stood by me and shown me huge support – the management, my team-mates and the fans.
“I want to let everyone know that I will give everything I have to repay them and deliver success over the years to come. I’m still very young with a lot more to learn and I can’t wait to continue my progress under Jose Mourinho.”
Mourinho also heaped praise on his defender, insisting he deserves the new contract: “Luke fully deserves this contract. He understood his development process, he has worked really hard at every level and he always believes in himself which is a great attribute to have.
“Luke is still young and is improving all the time and he must feel very proud of himself. I am delighted that we are keeping such a talented young English player with a bright future ahead of him.”
Since joining the Red Devils, the £27m defender has featured sporadically, appearing just 75 times across all competitions in that time, and only opening his account during the first match of this season against Leicester City.
News of Shaw’s contract extension has alleviated some frustration currently presiding over the club, with a number players set to become free agents this summer.
David de Gea, Anthony Martial, Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia and Andreas Pereira will all see their present deals expire in six months’ time, but the club have the option of extending those for a further year.
Meanwhile, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Ashley Young could all part ways from the club this summer unless fresh terms are agreed.
Jose Mourinho’s men face a daunting trip to west London to take on Chelsea in Saturday’s lunchtime Premier League kick-off.
