Robert Pires believes his former club Arsenal will “100%” finish in the Premier League top four this season.
After their opening eight matches, the Gunners find themselves sitting in fourth; two points behind leaders Manchester City who are only ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool on goal-difference.
If Arsenal were to end the 2018/19 campaign in one of the top four places it would be a marked improvement from the last two seasons, finishing fifth (2016/17) and sixth (2017/18) respectively, and former winger Pires is backing them to do so.
“For the moment I am very happy of course for the club because I am an ambassador for Arsenal but especially for Unai Emery because he’s a great manager,” he told reporters (via the Express) while attending the 2nd Teqball World Cup in Reims.
“He did well with Sevilla, he won some titles, especially with Paris Saint-Germain last season.
“And of course you know you need to improve every day but Arsenal actually are on a very good run, especially in the Premier League.
“Nine games, nine victories so I think they will finish in the top four, sure, 100 per cent.”
Emery’s start
Unai Emery had the difficult task of following the Gunners’ most decorated and long serving manager Arsene Wenger this summer.
After a tough start the Spanish tactician is starting to get his message across and the results are starting to follow. So far he’s overseen 11 matches in all competitions winning all but two (defeats against Manchester City and Chelsea in the Premier League).
Under him Arsenal have registered 29 goals (2.64 per game) and conceded just 13 (one every 76 minutes).
