Nacho gutted Saul plays for Madrid rival Atletico

Real Madrid defender Nacho has admitted it is “a shame” his Spain teammate and “great player” Saul Niguez plays for local rivals Atletico Madrid.

Saul scored a stoppage time goal in Atletico’s Uefa Super Cup victory over Real Madrid last month. The midfielder was also on the scoresheet during Spain’s 2-1 win over Spain in the Uefa Nations League on Saturday.

And Nacho, who scored a stunning goal for Spain against Portugal during the World Cup group stages, says he is very happy for his international teammate, although he wishes Saul didn’t play for Atletico.

“It’s a shame he plays for our rivals Atletico Madrid, but he’s been showing for a long time that he’s a great player,” Nacho said after Spain’s victory over England (via Football Espana).

“He’s very young, but he’s still a great player. He showed it in London by having a great game and scoring a goal.

“Everything good that happens to him will be good for the national team. I’m very happy for him.”

Saul, 23, made 56 appearances for Atletico across all competitions last season, scoring six goals and helping his side win the Europa League.

Dani Carvajal’s injury problems saw Nacho feature plenty of times for Real Madrid last term. He replaced his compatriot just 37 minutes into the Champions League final.

Both Madrid clubs are in action in La Liga this weekend, with Atletico hosting Eibar and Real Madrid traveling to Athletic Bilbao.
