The five best and five worst 2018/19 Serie A home kits

Italian football appeared to be in a bit of a slump this summer, following the national team’s failure to reach the World Cup in Russia.

That was until Cristiano Ronaldo signed for Juventus and all the talk shifted to a revolution in the Italian game.

Juve will undoubtedly be the favourites to claim another Scudetto – with the likes of Napoli, Roma and the Milan clubs set to be in hot pursuit – but who leads the way in style?

Here are Squawka’s best and worst five Serie A home kits for the 2018/19 season.

Best

5. Parma

One of Europe’s perennial ‘hipster‘ football clubs, the releasing of a Parma kit is always a hotly anticipated event.

And this year is no exception, the black cross on a white shirt gives this strip a retro feel that has just the right amount of class. Guaranteed to be a big seller this season.

4. Inter Milan

Inter Milan’s home kit features a gold Nike logo to complement the traditional black and blue colours of the Nerazzurri.

The kit is inspired by the popular 1998-99 home kit to celebrate 20 years of partnership between the club and supplier, and Nike has more than delivered for this anniversary.

After last year’s bizarre, barcode-like attempt, it is nice to see Inter reverting back to their traditional stripes. This kit will be in high demand across Europe this year.

3. Lazio

It is safe to say that Lazio have been experimental with their kits over the years, and this year’s effort is no different.

However, Macron has got it absolutely spot on with their 2018-19 home kit – it combines style and tradition perfectly – as long as the Marathon Bet sponsor stays far, far away.

White on the top and light blue on the bottom, the club’s traditional colours are broken up by a dark blue eagle across the middle – this is an iconic symbol for the Biancocelesti.

Lazio missed out on Champions League football last season on their head-to-head record with Inter Milan. Should it be decided by kits this season, an arguably fairer way to do so, they will have no problem securing Champions League football.

2. AC Milan

The Rossoneri have been well off the pace on the pitch in recent times.

In the last seven years, they have won just one Italian Cup, haven’t won a league title since 2011 and are currently facing their longest wait for a European trophy since winning their 1988 European cup – 15 years after their 1973 European Cup Winners Cup.

However, during this barren spell, there is one thing that AC Milan have kept on producing throughout – beautiful kits.

And this year’s spin, Puma’s first effort, on the red and black is no different.

Inspired by the club’s classic kits of their 1990’s glory years, this strip features a stylish, traditional collar, the iconic red and black stripes that are synonymous with AC Milan, and solid black sleeves with a red stripe running through. This kit has proved massively popular among global football fans so far as AC Milan look to reaffirm their global status on the pitch as well.

1. Roma

No matter whether Italian football is dominating Europe, being embroiled in a match-fixing scandal or struggling to compete with its neighbours, there is always one thing the rest of the footballing world can look forward to – the release of a new AS Roma kit.

This year’s effort from Nike is a real thing of beauty. A slightly darker shade of red from last year is, as always, complimented by the yellow collar and Nike Swoosh.

This strip also features a subtle pattern inspired by the Lorica Hamata – the chain mail armour worn by soldiers in ancient Rome.

If Roma can deliver a major trophy this season, we could be seeing this kit for some time on the streets of the capital.

Worst

5. Bologna

When it comes to kits in Serie A this season, the standard is high but unfortunately, there are some lows.

In Bologna’s red and dark blue home shirt this year, we have a decent home shirt.

However, compared to the likes of Roma and AC Milan, it’s boring, lacklustre and uninspiring.

Serie A may not quite have the glitz and glamour it once did, but it is the European king in terms of home kits and even slightly off the mark efforts like this will struggle.

4. SPAL

Who told Macron it would be a good idea to make a football shirt that resembles a plastic bag?

SPAL’s 2018/19 home shirt is an absolute disaster – let’s move on as quickly as possible.

3. Chievo

What a mess.

This kit actually features quite a few subtle references to the club’s history – but why did they have to try to put them all onto one kit?

And did manufacturer, Givova, really think that a right-sided button on the collar would catch on?

Another Serie A kit that looks like it belongs on a bicycle, Chievo had better be careful, Team Sky will be trying to steal this one for themselves.

2. Fiorentina

Retro-style kits are the ‘in’ fashion at the moment.

They’re supposed to be fashionable and nostalgic, a throwback to the club’s glory years.

But one thing they’re certainly not supposed to be is boring – this kit leaves us all wondering whether it is actually Fiorentina’s home kit or just another of the club’s polo shirts.

1. Napoli

Saving the worst for last, it is truly heartbreaking to see such audacity lose so badly.

It’s a panther; a panther on a football shirt.

In an alternate universe, this kit might have come top in a kit ranking but, try as we might, we just couldn’t do it.

This design has about as much place on a football kit as a snake on a plane.

And speaking of snakes, if you really want to indulge in the peculiar, go and take a look at the Napoli goalkeeper shirt.
