Liverpool centre-back Vigil van Dijk says that Sergio Ramos is not his type of central defender, and certainly not the best.
The name Sergio Ramos is not a celebrated one on the red half of Merseyside after the Spaniard had a hand in injuring Mohamed Salah’s shoulder in the Champions League final last season.
In the months following the final in Kiev, with Real won 3-1, Dejan Lovren has been less than complimentary towards the Spaniard, claiming Ramos has been made to look better than he is by his Los Blancos team mate Raphael Varane.
And now Van Dijk has got involved with the ongoing spat between Ramos and his Anfield colleague, also emphasising Varane’s superiority.
“He is a great player and I respect what he has achieved but he is not the best, he is not my type of central defender,” Van Dijk told De Telegraaf.
“Ramos’ teammate at Real Madrid, Raphael Varane is my favourite. He is an excellent defender and has already won a lot.”
Speaking about the final, Van Dijk admitted that he didn’t know if Ramos’ challenge was deliberate, but claimed Madrid’s players targeted Trent Alexander-Arnold after Salah was substituted in the first half.
“I do not know if it was deliberate but mentally something changed when Salah came off,” Van Dijk added.
“Suddenly, Marcelo, Benzema and Ronaldo all appeared at Trent and released the entire right side. With Salah they never dared to do that.”
Asked if Liverpool would have won the final with Salah, the Dutchman said: “The match could have been different.
“I sometimes think about the match but I hope to be in the final again and on the right side of the score.”
Liverpool have made an excellent start to the season and are unbeaten in 11 Premier League games and the Dutch defender has played no small part in that.
The most expensive defender in the world is rapidly becoming the best defender in the world. He’s brought stability and fearlessness to the Reds defence, qualities which were sorely lacking at the beginning of last season.
Liverpool return to Premier League action against Watford next Saturday.
