Edinson Cavani delivers blunt response over his tough tackle on Neymar

Edinson Cavani has played down his clash with PSG team-mate Neymar in Uruguay’s loss to Brazil at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.

Brazil poster boy Neymar was left in a heap after a clash between him and Cavani in the second half, with the Uruguay forward booked for his actions.

He then reacted angrily to the referee’s decision and tried to pick his PSG strike-partner up from the floor.

Neymar scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot and Cavani was also unhappy with the referee’s decision to award the spot kick.

But speaking after the game, the 31-year-old insisted that he has no issues with his PSG team-mate and says games between two South American sides are always tense.

“When two South American teams meet, it’s always a bit intense,” Cavani claimed.

“I think it was a very good match, and in the end we protested a bit about the penalty.

“But these are things that happen, it’s always good to face big teams like Brazil and playing against great rivals like Neymar or the other players that make up this Brazil team.

“There are no friendly matches in football, sometimes there may be intensity, be the hot environment, but after the game, once the game is over, there is only peace and tranquility outside the field.”

More than just an international rivalry?

There have been suggestions that Cavani has not been entirely happy at PSG since Neymar’s record-breaking arrival at the club last year.

Having always been the man on free-kick and penalty duties at the Parc des Princes, the former Napoli forward is said to have been dismayed by the club’s decision to allow Neymar to take over from him.

There was drama last season when Cavani refused to let the Brazilian take a penalty in a league match against Lyon, only for him to miss it.
