“Every Premier League manager would want Fernandinho” – Garth Crooks

Garth Crooks believes ‘every Premier League manager would want Fernandinho’.

The Manchester City midfielder put in a fine performance in the club’s 3-1 derby win over rivals Manchester United last week, so much so that Crooks included him in his BBC Team of the Week.

Fernandinho had more touches (103) than any other player and won more duels (seven) than any of his team-mates against Manchester United and Crooks, a former Stoke City player, expressed how much he ‘adores’ the Brazilian international.

He wrote in his BBC column: “Regular readers of my Team of the Week will know how I adore Fernandinho. There cannot be a manager in the Premier League who would not want him in his side.

“There was a priceless moment in the Manchester derby where Fernandinho grabbed Riyad Mahrez by the scruff of the neck (in a Dave Mackay-Billy Bremner fashion) because he was forced to run past Mahrez in order to make a tackle when United appeared to be getting back into the game. Mahrez was substituted shortly afterwards, probably for his own safety.”

Fernandinho’s Manchester City career so far

Fernandinho first moved to Manchester City in 2013, making a reported £35m move from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.

After initially struggling to impose himself as a regular starter for the club, the 33-year-old has now become a key man in the City side, especially since Pep Guardiola joined the club in 2016.

The Spaniard said of Fernandinho: “If a team has three Fernandinhos, they would be champions.”

The 49-time Brazil international has played 244 games for the Citizens, scoring 23 goals and winning two Premier League titles and three League cups along the way.
