Madrid loanee shocked by Zidane and Lopetegui departures

Real Madrid youngster Achraf Hakimi has expressed his surprise at the recent turnover of managers at the 13-time European champions.

Julen Lopetegui, 52, was recently dismissed from the Bernabéu on the back of a disappointing start to 2018/19 which culminated in a humbling 5-1 loss at eternal rivals Barcelona.

Hakimi, who is currently enjoying a loan spell at Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, couldn’t believe how short his stay was as well as the sudden departure of his predecessor Zinedine Zidane.

“I was surprised by how little time he was given. He didn’t have the time to show his potential as coach,” he told Radio Marca.

“A team like Real Madrid will change the dynamics now and they will get out of the doldrums they find themselves in.”

“We didn’t know anything about it [Zidane leaving]. We thought he was going to continue at Real Madrid,” he added.

“Only he really knows his reasons for leaving and he decided it, but I’m happy for him and he deserves all the good things that happen to him.”

A brief tenure

Lopetegui’s appointment as Real Madrid boss following Zidane’s resignation shocked observers as he was preparing to guide Spain at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

His exit on the eve of the tournament threw La Roja’s plans in the air but he wouldn’t have expected to be sacked four months into his dream job.

Real started with a 4-2 loss against city rivals Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup, but they’d win their opening three La Liga games, before drawing away to Athletic Bilbao.

Back-to-back wins over Roma and Espanyol, in the Champions League and La Liga respectively, led to a run of five matches without a win (scoring once in the process). Lopetegui would ultimately oversee 14 matches and winning less than half of those (6) whilst his side bag 21 goals but conceded 20 in return.
