Eden Hazard thinks new Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain is more like Diego Costa than teammate, Olivier Giroud.
Giroud has played 44 games for Chelsea since joining from Arsenal in January 2018 but has only managed 10 goals during that time.
Can Higuain solve Chelsea’s goalscoring crisis? Five key things to know…
- Chelsea confirmed the loan-signing of Gonzalo Higuain from Juventus earlier this week.
- The Argentine had been at AC Milan for the start of this season, scoring eight goals in 22 games.
- Current Chelsea strikers, Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud, have only managed a combined six Premier League goals this season.
- Eden Hazard has been playing as a false-nine recently and is Chelsea’s top scorer with 13 goals in all competitions.
- Hazard rates Higuin as ‘one of the best strikers at the moment’, comparing him to ex-teammate Diego Costa.
That, coupled with the poor form of Alvaro Morata, has forced Maurizio Sarri to bring Higuain, who scored a Serie A record 36 goals in 35 games during the 2015/16 season under the Italian, in on loan from Juventus until the end of the season.
And Hazard, who has been playing as a false-nine in recent weeks, believes Higuain is more of an outright goalscorer in the mould of former Chelsea star, Diego Costa, while Giroud is more of a team player.
“Have we missed a striker like Costa since he left? Yes of course,” Hazard said. “I like playing with Giroud and Morata, but when Olivier is playing he is doing his best for the side, he is more of a team player than a striker that just scores goals.
“Diego was sometimes not the kind of player to play a one-two with, but in the box he was amazing. He just scores one goal, we won and you have the three points. That’s what we need.
“I think HiguaÃn is this kind of player, he can also link with the winger with the midfield, and he can also be the proper striker. Can he make a big impact for the rest of the season? Yes, I hope so.”
Hazard also lauded Higuain as ‘one of the best strikers at the moment’, adding: “I like to play with top, top players. At Chelsea, I was able to play with one of the best in Costa for three years.
“I think Higuain is one of the best at the moment. He has scored a lot of goals. When you see his career he has done it everywhere, Real Madrid, Napoli and Juventus. I think he can do the same here.
Higuain teased by ex-AC Milan teammates
Higuain spent the first half of this season on loan at AC Milan, scoring eight goals in 22 games for the Rossoneri.
However, it only took two hours for his former Milan teammates to start mocking Higuain, with Suso and Jose Mauri teasing the Argentine after an image uploaded to his Instagram page where he was wearing tight tracksuit bottoms.
“They could give you bigger trousers,” quipped Suso.
Mauri replied: “They [Chelsea] spent all money on you [Higuain], so they have no more XXL size.”
Higuain was unveiled to the Stamford Bridge crowd ahead of Chelsea’s League Cup semi-final win over Tottenham and could make his first appearance for the club against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.
