Man Utd have only one “world-class” player – Paul Ince

Manchester United’s former midfielder Paul Ince believes the club only have “one world-class player.”

The former England international believes there can be no excuses for the Red Devils’ poor start to the 2018/19 season and does not buy Mourinho’s claims that United are in a rebuild.

The Old Trafford club have struggled to keep pace with their title rivals in the first dozen games of the season and currently trail leaders Manchester City by 12 points following their 3-1 defeat in the Manchester derby at the weekend.

Mourinho stated that more funds are needed for United to close the widening gap between his side and the likes of Liverpool, City and Chelsea, but this is not a view shared by Paul Ince.

He is not used to seeing his former club having to play catch-up and also thinks the£387 million splashed out on transfers since Mourinho took charge has not been used well and should therefore not be used as an excuse.

“When I was watching the game, I realised there was not one world-class player on the pitch for United, David De Gea aside,” Ince told Paddy Power.

“How has it come to that? When you look at City, nearly every player is at that level.

“The bottom line is, United’s recruitment hasn’t been as good as City’s.

“Money can’t be used as an excuse either – it’s not as though Jose Mourinho hasn’t had millions to spend.”

As well as questioning the quality of United’s recruitment, Ince also had a pop at the mentality of the current squad claiming they were running scared in the derby defeat to City at the weekend.

He added: “In Jose Mourinho style, they were set up as though they were terrified of conceding any goals, and didn’t want to try and outscore them either.

“Once City got the first goal, they didn’t make any attempt whatsoever to get back into the game. And, even when they tried, they just weren’t good enough.”

United have very little chance of winning the title with the gap already at 12 points, but they are also sweating on their chances of finishing in the top four, with Arsenal sitting four points ahead of them in the final Champions League spot.

United face the Gunners on 4 December, a game that will be massive to both the club and Jose Mourinho.
