Summer improvements have made Liverpool ‘serious title contenders’, says Neville

Liverpool are now “serious title contenders” following their summer transfer business, according to former Manchester United defender Gary Neville.

After finishing in the top four in the Premier League and reaching the Champions League final – where they lost 3-1 to Real Madrid – Jurgen Klopp’s side sought to improve upon their already talented squad to ensure they challenged for the league title this season.

The Reds brought in AS Roma goalkeeper Alisson for £66.8m to strengthen their defence and both Fabinho and Naby Keita from AS Monaco and RB Leipzig respectively for a combined total of £94.5 million to boost their midfield.

Following Stoke City’s relegation, Liverpool were able to steal Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri away for roughly £13 million.

And these signings have turned Liverpool into the title chasers they aim to be, according to Sky Sports football pundit Neville.

Speaking on Monday Night Football (via Liverpool Echo) Neville said: “They have started the season really well.

“At the start of last season they dropped points to teams like Cardiff but I think what has happened is they’ve bought well over the summer. Last year I think squad depth cost them but Jurgen Klopp has sorted that out and brought players in.

“It’s games like this where you use your squad and bring players in and he’s shown that he trusts them. I think when you’ve got a squad like Liverpool, particularly in the way that they play, you’ve got to put the squad players in and trust them.

“I think Liverpool are at the point now where you are thinking they are serious title contenders. They play fast, open, attacking football and they’ve got the squad to deal with the amount of games that they play.”

Liverpool’s season so far

Klopp’s squad have been extremely impressive so far this campaign, putting their name very much in the frame for the Premier League title by the end of the season.

With 10 games played, the Merseyside club are currently unbeaten, winning eight games and drawing with fellow title chasers Manchester City and Chelsea.

What has been evidently better this season is their defence. Liverpool have only conceded four goals in the league and with their attacking prowess of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane continuing their excellent form of last year, the Reds have a great chance to get their hands on their first Premier League trophy.
