Thomas Muller’s wife slams Niko Kovac for dropping husband in Freiburg draw

Thomas Muller’s wife took a shot at Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac for leaving it until the 70th minute to play her husband against Freiburg.

Bayern dropped two more points on Saturday as they gave away a one-goal lead at the death against Freiburg at the Allianz Arena. Lucas Holer latched on to a brilliant cross from left-back Christian Günter to poke the ball past Manuel Neuer.

Muller was not introduced into the action until late in the game and his other half, Lisa, was less than impressed by this decision.

“More than 70 minutes until he finally has a brain wave,” she wrote on Instagram before her husband was subbed in for James Rodriguez with 20 minutes left to go.

As diplomatically as he could, Muller suggested that his wife’s comments came from a supportive place, but weren’t exactly helpful while Kovac brushed off the whole affair.

“It was out of emotion. In retrospect I don’t think it was super. But she just loves me, what should I do?” the Germany star told Sky, as reported by Goal.

Kovac added: “There’s nothing to clarify. Obviously it wasn’t Thomas himself who wrote that.”

Lisa Muller apologises to Kovac

Following the Instagram incident, Bayern Munich released a statement on the club’s official website confirming Lisa Muller did apologise to Kovac following the draw against Freiburg.

“Lisa Muller, the wife of Thomas Muller, went directly after the Bundesliga game against Freiburg in the Allianz Arena to coach Niko and apologised for her Instagram post during the substitution of Thomas Muller,” the club said.

“Kovac accepted her apology.”

Bayern won the Bundesliga for the sixth consecutive time last season, but they currently trail four points behind Borussia Dortmund in second place.

The Bavarians have a chance to gain some ground on the league leaders next Saturday when they take on Dortmund in the first Klassiker of the season.
