Barcelona could be "interested" in technically gifted La Liga star linked with Arsenal and Spurs

Barcelona would be interested in signing Isco, according to former player Sergi Barjuan.

The 26-year-old Real Madrid midfielder created headlines following reports he refused to shake the hand of manager Santiago Solari after their recent 3-0 defeat at Eibar.

Could Isco leave Real Madrid? Five things you need to know…

  1. Isco signed a five-year extension with Real Madrid in 2017 after turning down an approach from Barcelona.
  2. He went on to deliver a Man of the Match display in the Uefa Super Cup win over Manchester United that summer.
  3. And made 11 appearances as Los Blancos won the Champions League at Liverpool’s expense.
  4. But he played just half of Real’s matches since the appointment of Santi Solari, under whom Isco is yet to start.
  5. His release clause is worth £620m, but Mundo Deportivo say a host of Premier League and Serie A clubs are now targeting Isco.

Isco’s perceived act of insubordination after the Eibar defeat preceded Solari’s decision to omit him from Madrid’s squad ahead of their Champions League game at AS Roma.

Isco, yet to start under the Argentine coach, was photographed looking perplexed as he entered the Stadio Olimpico. This has fuelled transfer links to Premier League clubs such as Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs as well as Juventus, AC Milan and Napoli, all of whom are listed as interested parties in the aforementioned Mundo Deportivo report.

Barjuan, who enjoyed nine seasons at Barça up till 2002, has suggested his old club are likely to also be keeping tabs on the situation after they made contact – according to Isco – with the Spanish midfielder last year.

“I don’t know how each coach manages their starting line-up and backups, but it’s true that coaches are there to take decisions,” three-time La Liga winner Barjuan told Radio MARCA.

“Solari took a decision. From Barcelona’s point of view, he is a player who could interest them because he plays with touch and can link up with people well.

“With this, we’re speaking a little bit in a joking manner. In the end, the season is long and Real Madrid will have a lot of matches and will need everyone.”

Isco’s Real Madrid career so far:

Isco came through Valencia’s youth set-up but would only make seven appearances for the club before joining Malaga.

It was at the Andalusian club where he would make his name, particularly during the 2012/13 season when Manuel Pellegrini’s side reached the Champions League quarter-final. That campaign turned out to be his last for Malaga, as Isco opted to move to Real Madrid.

Since joining Los Blancos the Spanish attacking midfielder has gone on to register 44 goals and 52 assists in 253 appearances and his trophy cabinet now contains one La Liga title and the Copa del Rey along with the Supercopa de España, in addition to four Champions League trophies plus three Uefa Super Cups and Fifa Club World Cup: 2014, 2016, 2017.
