Chelsea’s race for the title hits a major stumbling block as Jamie Vardy punishes the Blues at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea went in to this one unbeaten in 12 Premier League home games, keeping a clean sheet in each of the last three games at Stamford Bridge in the competition.
They were also looking for their fifth consecutive Premier League victory on Saturday and to maintain the pressure on Liverpool and Manchester City above them.
The Blues were wasteful going forward this afternoon and failed to capitalise on the lion’s share of possession they enjoyed and several clear-cut chances.
Jamie Vardy was on hand to punish Maurizio Sarri’s men in the second half with an excellent finish, and the Blues failed to come up with an answer as Leicester worked doggedly to suppress them all afternoon.
Here are the ratings from Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat.
Chelsea
Kepa Arrizabalaga – 6 – Not much to do save from a few catches. Made a super stop on the edge of half time from Ndidi’s strike. Couldn’t do much to stop Vardy.
Cesar Azipilicueta – 5 – He failed to make an impression going forward and was shaky in defence at times.
Antonio Rudiger – 6 – Made some important interventions and distributed the ball well from the back. Missed a sitter at the end of the game.
David Luiz – 6 – Was Chelsea’s brightest spark in the first half. The Brazilian led from the back with some well timed challenges. He switched play skilfully, too. Lost Vardy for the goal and looked rattled at times in the second half.
Marcos Alonso – 5 – Didn’t make any major errors, but struggled to penetrate Leicester on the left flank. Was very unlucky not to equalise in the 90th minute when his shot struck the inside of the goal.
N’Golo Kante – 7 – Worked well with his colleagues in midfield to control possession and win the ball back quickly after losing it. engineered several opportunities for players ahead of him.
Jorginho – 6 – Kept Chelsea ticking in the midfield with his short passing skills. Cool, calm and collected as per usual, but the players in front of him failed to finish off their chances.
Mateo Kovacic – 6 – Distributed the ball well, but didn’t produce anything of significance in this one.
Pedro – 6 – The Spaniard was full of energy and made a concerted effort to get behind the Foxes defences on Saturday. Produced multiple crosses, but he couldn’t create that killer chance for himself or his team mates.
Eden Hazard – 7 – The skilful Belgium was Chelsea’s biggest threat by far. Was unlucky not to open the scoring in the first half when his shot smashed against the crossbar. Made several incisive runs throughout the game.
Willian – 6 –The Brazilian switched between flanks with Pedro, but had more luck on the left as he got in several good positions. Should have done better towards the end of the first half when he had an opportunity to test Kasper Schmeichel after a Chelsea counter, but his shot was tepid. He couldn’t unlock Leicester in defence in the end.
Substitutes:
Olivier Giroud (for Willian 60) – 5 – Couldn’t make an impact on the game.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek (for Kovacic 60) – 5 – Didn’t have any significant effect.
Cesc Fabregas (for Jorginho 74) – 5 – Produced nothing to write home about.
Leicester City
Kasper Schmeichel – 7 – Made a good stop against Jorginho’s effort, and stopped another from Hazard in the second. Clean sheet.
Ricardo Pereira – 9 – Played excellently at right-back. Made some excellent blocks and tackles. He got forward really well, too. It was his run that unleashed Maddison, who assisted Vardy.
Wes Morgan – 8 –Defended brilliantly. Not allowing Chelsea’s attackers to get ahead of him. Made several good blocks and tackles.
Harry Maguire – 7 – Was lucky not to gift Hazard the opener when his poor ball control allowed the Belgian a clear run on goal. Made some silly fouls in dangerous areas. Was excellent otherwise.
Ben Chilwell – 9 –Was absolutely phenomenal at left-back, didn’t stop working and got the better of Azipilcueta and Pedro for much of the game.
Hamza Choudhury – 7 – Broke up play well in midfield and helped Leicester maintain a solid shape throughout.
Nampalys Mendy – 6 – Didn’t have much of the ball, but helped his side snuff out attacks by crowding players around the box. Booked.
Wilfred Ndidi – 6 – Had the best chance of the first half with an excellent strike. Didn’t get to do much with the ball as Chelsea had most of the possession, but he defended well along with his colleagues this afternoon. Booked.
Marc Albrighton – 7 – Worked in tandem with Choudhury and Pereira to stifle the Blues on the flanks and was a menace going forward at times.
Jamie Vardy – 8 – Was very quiet in the first half, but he was razor sharp when he latched onto Maddison’s pass to finish with style in to the roof of Chelsea’s net.
